I just changed my lower unit oil on my DP-C1. I have only had the boat for a month and have had it on the water 1 time for 2 hours or so. I checked the Ujoint bellows and there was a little oil in the bottom of it. I talked to a local boat mechanic and they said obviously the seals need replaced, but if i kept the lower unit full of oil i could make it till the end of the season. Then i would have all the seals replaced when i have it winterized.

Does this sound okay? There wasnt any water in my lower unit, just a little leaking into the bellows which seemed sealed. I think if i check the oil each day when i pull it out of the water, i should be okay for 2-3 more uses before i put it up for the winter?

Thoughts? Im also having all the other wear parts on the tilt system such as bushings replaced this winter so that everything will be new for next season.

I think you'll get a lot of different responses here. But personally for me... if the amount of oil leaking into the bellows is pretty small, you keep the drive topped off before each use, and water isn't making its way into the drive, I see no reason to go through the hassle now as opposed to waiting for the winter layup period.

Better read up on replacing that seal. You will have to learn how to set the rolling torque on the drive gear bearings and you will need a new pretension sleeve. Set the rolling torque wrong and by, by upper. You can just pull out the double bearing box to do it and not dis-assemble the whole upper. Change the gear shift mechanism eccentric seal and make sure it is inserted with the proper side facing the oil. Manual can be found at boatinfo.no/lib/library.html# (add a www)

My outdrive is in the shop now because water got in, oil got out. I say don't gamble. Outdrive are very expensive. I'm very lucky my issue was the shops fault or else I could not afford to fix this, id honestly have to get rid of the boat.

in a different thread I indicated you will need a complete upper seal kit, new thrust washer, and new crush sleeve. did you download the manual? you will need it to set the rolling torque that Billbayliner indicated

check your oil before and after every outing. you can go from a small amount of oil pushing past the seal to lots of oil pushing past the seal in one trip.
