Most don't understand what goes into boating, safe boating.....I haven't completed a "to do" checklist in years. Some think cause she looks bad.....she is bad. We all know it's the things not seen by the commom observer are the most important to us.

Next time you pull'er out--get in sit down with a fishing pole in hand and just sit there--folks stay away from crazy people.:D

Great idea, and if they try to talk to you say "Shh your scaring the fish away"

Same here only my car is 15 yrs old, my boat is 20 yrs, my house is 50 yrs, and my wife is... well we wont go there.

I have a 35 year old car. (and a newer one) a 25 year old trailer a 2006 motorcycle. People were happy when I brought home the boat... I got rid of the 40 year old motorhome to do it! yeah and don't ask how old the wife is she hit that number this year and she feels old.

We live 9 miles from two lakes out here so boats are very common. I feel sorry for you guys in those neighborhoods or HOA's I would NEVER live there. I like my freedoms way to much.

People who don't know anything about boats assume they are all expensive. So it is not unusual for neighbors to be jealous of a boat showing up in your driveway.

Re: People and your boat...

I am always dragging my used 175 Sea Ray bowrider home the day before I use it. I have been wondering what neighbors up the street have to say as well since they all have to drive past my house to get out of the hood. One slowed down last time I was out there washing it. She just drove real slow and said she wished she was my friend and kept on going.... I don't get people. My boat is worth 5000 on a good day. Some people blow that on a two week vacation to see some huge ball of twine somewhere... Anyone can pick up a decent used boat for an extra hundred bucks a month. We purposely bought a house that was way less than the "bank" said we could afford. If we bought a bigger house the bank said we could swing - we would be eating mac and cheese and PBJ's from week to week. We then bought some used toys to enjoy as well. We have a "used" camper as well I drag home. People must think we are the rich people on the street. LOL !!!! We just managed our crappy paychecks to maximize the fun.... you know.... THE FUN !!

Hey canyonkid do you like that br175. What year is it.

Nice! I used to race on a J-24 out west. They are fun boats - especially in heavy air. There are/were silly good deals in on sailboats socal when I visited friends back there last summer.

I live about 1 mile from lake Ontario so I think having a boat is pretty much not an issue.

Luckily for me the original owner of my house had a 20 some odd foot boat and had the driveway widened so that the area next to the attached garage is paved.

Now I have a place for the boat that looks like a boat belongs there, and because the driveway was widened I can fit 11 cars in the driveway, plus the boat, plus two more cars in the garage. Great for holidays and parties.

Re: People and your boat...

Does seem like people who don't own boats look at those that do as being rich. All I can say is, "hummmm, whatever!" I know that when we lived in a nice house in a nicer neighborhood of south metro Denver, Colorado and owned an older (1989) bowrider, some people where I worked at really though wife and I were rich. These co-workers even thought we lived in a very "snobby" type neighborhood. Fact is, these co-workers lived in parts of Denver that I would be in at night! As far as the boat went, it only cost us
$5K, but for these people, even $5K was a lot of money. Our neighbors never had a problem with our boat because we kept it in our garage. It was a 16 footer. We had a neighbor down the street that him and his brother each owned very nice 25' fully-contained cabin cruisers. They put them on Lake Meade, but parked them on the street just prior to taking them to Meade.
We now have a 20' Cuddy that is stored in a Boat/RV Storage area. Nobody at the apt. complex where we live have seen our boat.
As far as taking someone on a boat, just have to beware of who it is. There is a word called "liability" when it comes inviting people out for a boat ride. Some people have health conditions that shouldn't be allowed on a boat.
But, bottom line is........I really do think many people get jealous towards people who have boats AND RV's, swimming pools, Vet's-Beemers-Mercedes and Jags, can travel to really nice places and eat at top-notch restaurants.

Re: People and your boat...

I have a neighbor that likes boats (he's owned a couple in his younger years), but he HATES stuff parked in a neighbors driveway (thinks if it isn't just you daily driver car, it's junking up the neighborhood and driving down his property value). I think alot of people are afraid a boat is gonna become a piece of "yard art" and drive values down.

when my brother & I shared a house when we were young I got the Lonestar and parked it in the driveway- after a couple weeks I got a letter from the City of Grapevine saying it was against regulations to park a boat in the driveway. Grapevine is a boating town with 1 out of 10 houses with a boat in the driveway- I called the code office and they said they only send a letter if someone complains-but thats all they do.
So we pulled my brother's bass boat outta the garage on to driveway too and put our canoe on a small utility trailer in the front yard.

never heard another word.

Re: People and your boat...

From my kitchen window I can see -

1. An aluminum drift boat parked in front of the house on the corner.
2. A big *** Trophy fishing boat. (26-28 feet or so)
3. A smaller boat that I am not sure about. Something like a 16' Bayliner open bow.
4. A Yamaha 21 footer (I think) with the two jetski engines and jet drives.

Then if I go out my front door so I can see further down the street I can see two more boats that I cannot identify. One seems to be something like a 19' something 'r other, and one that has been under a tarp for as long as I can remember. From the little I can see, it looks something like a 24' or so bayliner. If I go down to the corner and look both ways, I can see probably 6 or 7 more boats of all sorts.

So my 1987 21.5 foot Reinell 215c gets little attention at all.

However, I was out on the Sacramento River today, and as we came back in to go home, someone said "Beautiful boat. Nice Retro look." Retro?!?!?!? RETRO?!?!? I wish he would have stopped at the beautiful boat part. I guess it's retro because it doesn't have one of those UG LY [expletive deleted] oil drilling derricks on top of it, and has a teak swim platform instead of those while molded looking things?? Sigh.

I am a neebie boat owner and am feeling that 'vibe' now and again. I tell my friends that I just bought a boat this summer and they look at me like what bank did I rob. I paid 3000 for my boat and got a great deal yet it is less than some of my friends spend on their mountain bikes. Go figure. Mountain bike or boat not a hard decison for me. Meanwhile loving the water and the cool threads on this site.

Interesting. When we were looking at the house we bought five years ago, I was in the garage gauging if I could get my 20' Four Winns in it. The wife came out and asked what I thought, I said, I like it, the boat will fit. She said but you haven't seen much else of the house. I repeated to her: the boat will fit, we're good here. I have to park my car in the snow for the winter but that's okay since I know my boat is safely stored. My wife thinks it's an unnatural relationship, the boat and me that is. She is named Priority 1 after all.

On Ontario you are? Over here in the Finger Lakes on Skaneateles (the "poor" end of the lake).

I'm sure my neighbors talk about us too. They've stared at the Baja, made comments when we traded up to a bigger Baja. We brought home the bigger Baja and bought a new Lexus in the same month this summer, so I'm sure they are talking about that too.

I really don't care. We work hard, play hard, and spend our money how we see fit. My wife and I are living life and enjoying every second of it... if that makes my neighbors jealous, then so be it.

I feel guilty at work and there is a since of Jealousy. My computer wall paper is a picture of my boat at the lake. One of my employees got pissed at me because I was talking about my boat. I get questioned almost every Friday. "So what are you doing this weekend". My reply "Going to the Lake" I get a shrug look and comment "Have FUN! I dont talk about my boat much any more at work.

Re: People and your boat...

I have no problem with jealousy. It's a normal human trait common to all. It's how people cope with it that can suck. I have a neighbor that has everything. I'm not shy at all to tell him that I wish I had all of the things that he does. For me it's not a negative thing, it's more like complimenting him on how well he is doing. I'd rather have all my neighbors doing better than me than have them all in a worse spot.

Also I've found that rich neighbors are almost never snobby if you are a good neighbor to them. People just want to enjoy what they have without someone else stinking it up. Treat them with attitude or give them an eyesore to look at and any neighbor will have a problem.

I have no idea (nor do I care) what my neighbors may or may not think about the boat. Everyone has their own toys and their own preferences as to how they spend their money and time. I feel happy for a neighbor (or friend) when I see them with a toy and one that they use and get pleasure from and I suspect that my close neighbors (and friends) feel the same for me with the boat. My friends and neighbors do comment, in a good way, on the fact that the admiral and I use the boat each weekend and that I spend a lot of time cleaning her up and keeping her shiney (the boat that is) after each outting. It is all part of the process is my response.

Re: People and your boat...

I have never had any issues with the neighbors as we are all friendly to each other and they can tell im clearly not rich by the size of my house and yard (small cape on a quarter acre)(around here a one acre lot is considered small nevermind a quarter acre lot) Its the co-workers who i have a problem with.

At one point i had 2 vehicles, an 05 tundra and a 2000 honda s2000. and for some reason people thought my 10 year old honda with 120k miles on it meant i was rich and overpaid. yes it did look clean, and yes it was a sharp car, but in the grand scheme of things it was only worth about 10k. These people had never seen my house and know i am very frugal with certain things so i can afford my toys. Now that i sold the car i dont plan on telling any coworkers about the boat unless they are close friends. I prefer to fly under the radar here.
