i have no connection to this, other than being a satisfied customer.
Magic Jack, http://www.magicjack.com/1/index.asp you plug it into your usb port, then you phone system into it. i am using a cordless system with 4 phones, i had for the land line. it will issue a phone number in your area code, or any other area code you want. then it works just like a land line. it was extremely simple to set up, i did it.

i've been paying $40.00 a month for land line, plus cell phone. this was $40.00 first year, includes the port and shipping, then only 19.95 a year.

i am 100% satisfied. cut your cost. as i said i am just a satisfied customer, wanting to help you in tight times. TD.

I looked at them when they first started advertising them but I loose power too often. It would be alright if you install a UPS on your puter.

Does that mean you'll have a different phone number? or does your no. stay the same?

why not cancel the land line and just use the cell?

this would really be something if you could get dsl thru them.

Re: Phone bill, get rid of it. i have one.

Ayuh,....

This is alittle Different,...
But,..
A couple of months ago, My Love,+ I were discussing how much my landline is used,...
Which was about 0% of the time,... We both have Cellphones...
Actually, only 1 of my Buds has been calling me on the landline...
Other than Ed,... The only calls coming in were either wrong #s, or politcal calls from canidates, only because the Politicains are exempt from the state,+fed. Don't Call lists....
So,....
I walked over to the phone, picked it up,.......
And,....
It was DEAD.......
It hadn't rang in over a month, maybe 2... Don't know how long it had been DEAD...

That was when I decided it was time to start saving that $35. a month...
It wasn't Easy, but after awhile I got Verizon to shut it off...
Verizon was trying to tell me that a Cellphone is a poor excuse for primary communications,... Until I told them my Cellphone is also Verizon...
Even then, they thought it's much better to have both,.. Of course, It's all about the Money, not the service to them...
They didn't even want to talk about the Fact that my line was Dead,+ for an unknown time at that...

Ayuh,... It was tough giving up the # that's been Mine for 20 years or so,...
But,...
My company paid for Cellphone, with the same #, except for the pre-fix, will work Just Fine for Me....;)

it cuts down on the necessary expensive cell minutes needed. i rarely use my cell when i am home. this gives me a less expensive way to make local and long distance calls than the cell. using no minutes.

I am intrigued by a new service t-mobile offers. It uses a combination cell phone/wifi phone. The phone will automatically hook into your home network and make the calls through your router but will fall back to cell service when not at home or away from home.

When at home, you are not counting against your minutes. The service is an $8 add to your cell bill.

I am not sure it has been rolled out to all markets yet but my family may have to try this..

Do i have this right????
1.Discontinue your present phone service
2.Purchase the unit
3. It assigns you a new number
4. People can call in as well as you call out?
5 Is the new phone number permanent??
6. You pay 20 a year

yes we looked at that, but Sylvia, changed from t-mobile to version, my cell use is so low, i am cheaper still using my t-mobile 8 year old prepaid plan, than their lowest cost program.

Re: Phone bill, get rid of it. i have one.

I haven't had a house phone in about 11 years. The only need that I have had for one since then was right after Katrina. It took me about three months to get cable back, so I made a deal with my neighbor to pay his phone bill and he let me tap a line (separate #) that he had in a workshop. Since he rarely used the phone, it worked out fine. I put a pcmcia modem in an old laptop I had, and was back on the net in no time.

Other than that, I've just not felt a need for a house phone. I've been with Verizon for most of that time, and have had a high minute plan with free long distance and no roaming. I would have the plan anyway, and like being able to give people one number to get me, so a house phone just seems like a waste of money to me.

I am also about to switch to Sprint. I have no complaints with Verizon's service, but their pricing just isn't competative any more. Sprint has a "simply everything" plan with unlimited minutes, gps, internet, and television (on the phone) for about $100 a month. For those that need less talk time, they have a 900 minute plan and, I think, a 400 minute plan. Any of the plans can also shed the gps, inertnet/TV options for even more savings.

I use my work notebook with EVDO - so I can't attach anything to that.
My computer in the den is dial-up.
Would this be a catch-22 in my case?

TD, you may want to check out how the 911 service is with it. I had my land line changed over thru my cable modem. I had to call 911 one time and it took 15 minuets before they even sent the ambulance. Response time was 20 minuets total. 15 of that was finding out what state I was in, what county, and then what town. The ambulance station is only 5 minuets from my house. Several months later I had to call again, but I used my cell. Response time was 8 minuets. You may need to find out if your new number is traced to your location if it can be done at a reasonable time.

I've often wondered about the magicjack. I saw it once on one of those home shopping channels.

I keep a landline for fax purposes only. I used to have a cell phone that could send and recieve faxes though the pc but no more. I also give out the landline number to people who require a number that I know I never want to hear from (applications and stuff). I get akick out of knowing after five fings they get the modem -shihgshighding ding dingshigh:D:D

we have a dedicated land line for the fax only. when you register the majic jack, you register the address for 911.

Re: Phone bill, get rid of it. i have one.

My inlaws have the MagicJack and seem to like it. I don't particurlary care to talk to them on it. For me it sounds too much like a cell phone with shoddy reception. For me it would be useless as I have dial-up. The only other option I have for ISP is sat. and I don't think it will work on it due to latency.

I have high speed internet but its crappy. Speeds are up and down never consistent and I will frequently drop my connection for five minutes or so. The upside is it is very cheap through the condo association I live in. I don't think any of these internet phone services will work for me.

For those of you who are still using faxes, if you would like to do away with them, there is now an easy and very inexensive way to do so.

I send and receive all of my documents as PDFs, via email. I use an inexpensive scanner/copier/printer (about $90) and OpenOffice Writer to import the scans into a document. OpenOffice Writer has a built in function which saves a document in PDF format, so you don't have to buy the Adobe product. Since the OpenOfice software suite is a free download, there is no cost for the needed software.
