physical pain

Saw on the news last night the new ways doctors are treating war wounds at Walter Reed Hospital. Instead of just giving massive doses of morphine, they are actually targeting specific nerves near the wound to quell the pain. Pretty interesting I thought.

What is the worst physical pain you have had?

I guess I have two that come to mind. I had a tooth last year that was absessed, thought my head was going to explode.

I had a knee surgery in the late eighties. My wonderful Navy doctors forgot to write up what pain meds to give me when I came out of surgery. So as the anestesia wore off from my chest down (had a spinal), I began to feel blinding pain. I was screaming like a banshee until they finally injected me with morphine (ahhhh, morphine  ) That was probably my worst.

Re: physical pain

Bout the worst pain I can say I've had was a burn. Had a tractor radiator bust on me back in 1975 when I was in between a tank rack on the front of the tractor and the tractor frame. I was opening an agitator valve that was on the bottom of the tank. What the boss man found out, after he took me to the hospital, was a solder seam on the radiator tank had split. The radiator had just been rodded out and repaired. Shoddy job to say the least....I was burned with steam and hot water on my face, neck and down the side of my chest. I've had broke bones, hurting teeth, cuts and a bad case of road rash and nothing was worse than that burn.

Not saying that it isn't very painful, but here's a little of what I say to my wife when she brings that up.

She has a very low tolerance for pain. She went through 27 hours of labor with our first son. She didn't get drugged until the last couple of hours. She didn't scream or cry, but she did wince in pain a few times.

I have a very high pain tolerance. When my knee started burning from the fresh cutting of the surgery, I was screaming, had difficulty breathing, and was sobbing uncontrollably. Even wished for anything to make it go away, even death.

So my jury is still out on that whole childbirth being the worst pain ever. No disrespect intended, what women do is an amazing miracle, I just think that there is way worse pain than childbirth.

GaugeGuy, when you say the fresh cutting of surgery....did they not put you under a general to do the surgery?

They gave me a spinal block, so I was numb from the mid-chest down. They also gave me some kind of relaxant, but I was awake and aware for the surgery (acl replacement). That didn't hurt at all.

When they brought me to the recovery room is when all hell broke loose. I could feel the effects of the spinal block wearing off. It was weird, I could start feeling things lower and lower on my body each minute. When I could start feeling my legs is when the pain just started, then when it got down to my knee, it was like the world erupted in my brain.

It took them about an hour to chase down a doctor and have him write down what they were to give me for pain...morphine injections in the spine with a machine that was still hooked up from the spinal block. I could push a button every 5 minutes or so to inject myself.

I then proceeded to get addicted to morphine over the next three days. Found myself staying up and watching the countdown clock, when it hit 0.00 I'd pop myself again. It sucked big time kicking that addiction while they weened me off of it

Re: physical pain

I fell into a camp fire that was about 10 feet in diameter and about 6 feet tall. Oh did I mention we were at least six (6) hours from the nearest hospitol. My friend an EMT started scraping skin and dirt and red ambers from my skin, and emptied about 150 Lbs of ice I ended up laying in a big fishing cooler for aday or two. GOD BLESS our EMT's and all other service men and women out there.

Re: physical pain

The most intense pain I am sure was when I fell into a firepit at about age four. Don't remember the pain, just remember my stepdad jumping down into the flames in his pajamas to get me out. I still have 3rd degree burn scars on my knees.

I had a badly done TURP a few years back and I would rather jump back into the firepit than go through that again. If that was anything like childbirth women must be a lot better equipped to bear pain than we macho he-men.

TURP = Trans-Urethal Resection of the Prostate.

It's the post-operative period that is too miserable for words.

Had a kidney stone, RetNav. Gotta agree that it is intensely painful.

Everyone has a different threshold.

I can't disagree with JB. Kidney stones or other urinary tract malodies are EXTEMELY painfull to men. Women too, they just don't seem to be as prevalent.

I've had some dandies.

1. Four "impacted" wisdom teeth cut, drilled broken out with very limited local pain killer. Next day, on a tractor-spitting blood. I got over it. I hate dentists-to this day. Sadist *&^%$()'s

2. Broken thumb (right hand on right handed person-me) with NO medical attention. In college-embarrassed-don't want to alarm parents. Used typewriter.

3. Bent back (broken) knee. "Popped" the kneecap and tore some ligiments-I'm sure. No medical attention needed other than the emergency room doctor to say-WHOA!. Took about three months, as a young man, to heal. Again-college. The doctors, today, say it's a "mess". Works OK for me.

As of late.

4. Drilled into the thumb, to the bone (with a 3/8" bit). What a mess. No medical attention. It's pretty much healed. Thank goodness it was the left hand-this time.

Pain, IMHO is a "state of mind". I can look at my own wounds, all day. Show me a wound from someone I love and I get angry. "Why can't it be me"?

As you might have gathered, I DO NOT like doctors, nurses, dentists. They're all sadists, IMHO.

I've had several more dental procedures done. No gas, nor "knock out". No-you've got to suffer. I hate them.

I can't figure out why they won't put me under, they just say-"NO". I think, since I'm a big guy, it would cost them too much.

OK, doc, how about I come in "half baked", myself?
:D
