My brother and me paid 800.00 and did about a day's work and walked away with a 1975 19'6" Aquasport and 97 aluminum I beam tandem trailer. .

The outboard turned out to be shot in one cylinder and my brother bought a new F90 Yamaha for it.

It had one bad spot in the floor, that we repaired. The transom is damp in some places, but no rot that I can tell. We will dry that out and use this:

http://www.rotdoctor.com/products/cpes.html

There are some blisters all about below the water line. I have tried to break a few open and they won't break. I sanded into one until it was flush to the hull and I never could get break open. Not sure of the cause. The boat came out of Florida and the hull is stained from tannin sp?, from the water it might have been in.

Checked out the stringers and foam. About 40% of the foam in the boat was holding water and we remove that and replaced. The stringers are foam filled fiberglass and are dry.

All in all we got a good old Classic, now comes the fun part, sanding and painting and new hardware. It will be a fun project with a big payoff.

Re: Picked up a Classic

Those blisters are from water penetration into the polyester resin. Layers of fiberglass are separating below the surface. Generally this is not a structure issue but is very hard to get rid of even after opening up the blisters and re-glassing.

How about some pictures of the new ride?

Re: Picked up a Classic

Will get some pics up soon. The funny thing about the blisters is that they are hard as the rest of the hull and will not break open. I know they have to be from delamination. I don't think it is from osmossis as they are dry. Maybe the original reason was osmossis. Like I said before, I was able to sand one flush with the hull and there was no delamination in the layers that I sanded through.

Maybe I should try to drill into one and see what I find.

I don't know enough about it, but the hull seams very hard with no weak spots or flex. We checked that out pretty closely.

Again I will get some pics up soon.

pbailey

Re: Picked up a Classic

How big are the blisters ?? If a hull with osmosis is left up in warm sunny wheather for a season or two, blisters will be dry inside. Then it is quite easy to fix, as long as they are dry. A water proof epoxy primer for the purpose, applied in several layers, after sanding blisters flush with surface, will stop the problem. Problem only appears below waterline, so priming up to maybe 1 1/2" above waterline should do it, if thats the cause. International has a primer I know off, adn others will have as well.

They range in size from 1/8-inch to 1 1/4-inch in diameter. It's a pretty good bet that the boat sat in water at one time given the type and depth of stain at and below the waterline.

I know for sure that it has been stored properly on a trailer for at least two years and another two years not so properly, i.e. not covered, drains not open, leaves collecting etc.

We have had it for the last two years and the first thing we did was to try and get the bildge dry.

We cleaned it up and covered it until we could come up with some new power for it. We opened all the inspection plates in hope it would dry up.

We would uncover it from time to time when the sun and wind could get to it for awhile.

We found wet foam inside and got that out. We also found that the drains between stinger and hull sides to center bilge and the hull drain were filled with foam and removed that. That should go a long way to dry it out even more.

We want to use it for the rest of the season. We will get to sanding and painting this winter.

My buddy has some photo's of the boat underway that I'm still waiting for him to send me. I will post as soon as I get them.

Will post others as we go along.

www.imgreactor.com/myimgs/pbailey/

Re: Picked up a Classic

Hope I can lay up fiberglass and paint better than I can post pic's.

I will get some of the whole boat soon. A friend of mine has a few while underway as well, waiting for him to send.

All in all it's a pretty sound boat. Just needs the imperfections repaired and a good paint job.

pbailey

Re: Picked up a Classic

Thank you, and yes we feel we got a great deal!

Just added a raw water bait tank. Had to mount it forward of the console. Installed a through hull pick-up with shut off valve and pump about 2-feet ahead of the transom. Installed a small hatch for access. Plumbed feed for the tank below deck, that was fun! Overflow line is installed above deck to through hull.

Funny thing is we can't wait for the season to end so we can take all the stuff we are adding off and get to patching, sanding and painting. The hull and top side very dull and stained. Not to mention the couple hundred holes that have been drilled over the last thirty years to mount this or that.

pbailey
