I have model # 15032, serial # 52280. Only 418 engines aparts. Haven't got it to run right yet at low speed yet, I don't think I got the carb clean enough so it's gotta come off again.

Good engines. fix er up and git er running!

yeah, it's not worth anything, just junk, send it to my outboard graveyard. i will see that it gets a good service. actually, that is a super motor, for 150 - 250 you can have it as dependable as a new one, for another 50 years.

You will find on this forum it is thought of as blasphemy to say a motor of that vintage is worthless. Many of us run motors from the 50's for which you can still get parts and are better built, more reliable, if maintained correctly, and cheaper to fix than the stuff built today. Rick

In my info Chrysler was building a 9.2 in 67 and a 9.9 in 69 produced to 97.I don't have info for 68.

No offense meant gents! I'm in the salt water climate so to pull it apart and and not find extensive corrosion will be a miracle. Cool looking motor though, I wouldn't have guessed it was that old. I showed the 9.9 Chrysler to an older gent and he bought it today, I didn't realize it but years ago he had the dealership for Chrysler outboards in the early 70's. He was happy to have it. It had electric start and and the control cables. My summer runner is a 1989 15hp Johnson, works very well, I flush it after every use.

If it weren't for the corrosion, I would bet the 18 will outlast the 15. Rick

No doubt it probably would, but for now the 15hp gets a new impeller, plugs and fresh gas every spring and it's ready to go. I'm going to look into the 18hp more closely on the weekend.

This might sound sacrilegious especially coming from me, but if I could only have one or the other I'd take the 1989 15 hp over a 1960 18 hp any day. Both are great motors, but the 15 hp is superior in my opinion.

Wayne, superior in what way? I agree the 15 is more efficient and less polluting. But as for superior? The 15 costs way more to fix and maintain. Try to fix the ignition system on it. Parts are pretty much easy to get for both. The 15 is smaller but they weigh about the same. And way less room to work on the 15 inside. It's all crammed in and you have to remove half of everything to do a simple job.

The 15 costs way more to fix and maintain.

As long as they are both running fine, neither is more expensive to maintain. The ignition on the 15 hp is almost bullet proof. Most will never need any ignition work done. You certainly can't say that about the 18 hp. As well, you have to maintain the ignition on the 18 hp (clean points and gap) whereas the 15 hp is maintenance free.

Add that to all the other reasons you mentioned and you have all the reasons the 15 hp is superior. You can also add future parts availability to that list.

As far as which would I rather run, I'd take the 18 hp. Of course, that's for different reasons altogether. But if I could only have one or the other I'd choose the 15 hp.

The electronic ignition is the seller to me also. I have a 68 Chrysler Newport and the first modification was electronic ignition swap, trouble free and made driving the car much more enjoyable. My father was an oyster fisherman for years and all he had were old outboards that constantly needed maintenance. This 15hp was the first he had that you just drove! Anyway going to give the ol FastTwin a checkup today and see what ails it. Wish me luck.

Re: picked up a FastTwin today???ID help!

I still disagree. I don't like things I cant fix with a few common hand tools. I use my '66 18hp all the time (a few years now) and I have never cleaned or set the points or touched the coils. All I have done is change the impeller. Even when I bought it. I find the weak link is usually the carb, they need cleaning and that's common through all the years... And as soon as an electronic component does go... it's a lot of $$$ to get the parts...

Just look at the average thread on this forum on any given day and there's a lot more questions on a modern engine with spark issues than an old engine with spark issues. Because anyone can fix the old systems and they're dirt simple. No wiring diagrams needed. The only hard part is getting the flywheel off and that's not very hard. For electronic you need specialty tools and the know how.

The only reason I would ever consider a 'modern' engine is that they pollute less which is a concern for me.

lol - I knew that would get you, Steve! I just crapped on your baby! No offense intended.

The threads on spark issues are usually for larger motors. You don't see too many for the small hp motors like the 15 hp. However, the replacement ignition parts for the 15 hp aren't that expensive. In fact, they are comparable to replacing the universal magneto ignition. Ignition problems are certainly more difficult to diagnose and repair on the 15 hp, but they aren't that common either.

You are certainly right that repairing the old motors is easier and running them is a lot more fun, but when it comes down to it I still run a 1988 Johnson 30 hp on my primary fishing boat and not a 1950's Big Twin.

Do I have to turn in my AOMCI membership now? lol
