Hey fellas.

So my brother told me a person at his work was selling an older johnson 20hp for 200 but did not know the year, when I get there he also told me there is a parts motor included but it had seized from sitting but everything else was good on it, which at a glance did appear decent for parts.

Ok, I know you all will want to flame me :D but the situation I had never had a way of testing the motor. What I did do was pull it over and it had a real good compression feel and thud on exhaust stroke, gear shifter worked, foot did not have any chunks out of it, etc. Model# on the plate says FD-19D ser# C4545** taking it that this is a 1965? never thought it to be that old at first glance judging by the decals on it "thought they started going to decals in the 70's :p"

Anywho he says it runs excellent, he had a coil go on one cylinder he said and used a good coil off of the spare that he included "also gave me a spare set of pick up coils and the other ignition coil"

Are these motors hard to get parts for in Canada? I never really wanted a motor this big, really only wanted a 9.9-15 :p but the deal seemed good and the foot on the spare looked tight and no chunks out of it or anything. Paid 200 for the motor and spare:cool:

great deal, the parts are easy to get thru BRP. you should get a parts manual from outboardbooks.com.

LOL:D

Wont really be able to test the motor till I get a gas tank and hose for it

I am not sure if the lower unit gaskets are leaking or not, he said the run off was just from the exhaust port from it laying the way it was on the floor.. havent drailed the oil yet so wont really know..

Foot on the spare is green, so I am thinking it is a year or few newer the the other

Re: Picked up this old gal

Here are some pictures, I should add that the seller had used this motor last season. Few questions which concern me is the stains on the foot, he said it was from the exhaust from the way it sat I guess? and the lower foot area where the rundown/leak is darker. Is this normal for a motor of this year with not having the exhaust come through the prop? or am I looking new seals and possibly some rusty parts inside that foot? or am I just being paranoid and it is actual exhaust residue/unburn gas?

took some pictures, it needs a good cleaning, and if I decide to keep it I will likely repaint the top and put some new decals on it. One other question, the prop, is that normal? should there not be a cone on there? if not having one on there does it pose a problem?

Parts motor I got with it is still over at the sellers house because my brother didnt want to put it in the back seat of his car lol so I will be getting that tomorrow so no pictures of that. I guess I wont really know if the gaskets are leaking until I drain the foot oil ah? One side of the hood looks good but other side is a little faded and stained.

BRP only has parts for motors as low as 1968? Can anyone confirm the year for me?

I should also mention that last summer he said the motor was running on one cylinder before replaicing the coil so that could explain all that old leakage from only running on 1 cylinder at the time that would techincally make the exhaust "oiler"?

Re: Picked up this old gal

just pretend its a 1968!

I did that for my 66 18hp!

anyway, according to evinrude.com your motor is a:

FD-19 18hp 1965

Sooooo that hood, or transom mount are not original?

on the fuel pump side of the block, you'll see the freeze plug, what is the number on that?

That engine looks identical to my 69 20hp.

Re: Picked up this old gal

hmm interesting, I took off the cover and looked at the frost plug, same serial number as what is on the transom holder... so it is actually an 18hp with a cover off of a 69 20hp?
Serial# on plate is C45451*
Number on frost plug is C045451*

Just a suggestion - please resize your photos to 600 pixels on the longest dimension. Doing so will make it much easier to read your thread and that will keep people from not reading it.

The pictures and thread look totally fine to view on my end? maybe because my resolution is higher then yours?

Well I might be getting a 1 owner mint condition and lightly used 89 johnson 15 from a guy in town maybe. So maybe I will just keep this old dog as a back up, I am not sure what to do. Just wanted to know the info for the sake of knowing and to get a manual "found one" and to also know if those stains on the lower unit are ok or if I have a potiental problem on my hands? I am taking that is just normal from the exhaust etc as the exhaust doesnt go through the prop like on newer models? and is the prop ok with out a cone like that to operate?

Thanks

Those 18's are excellent engines. I have several of them and I have the '66 20 which is the same also. Yes, I believe there should be a cone on the prop but if it's not loose horizontally along the shaft I would not worry about it... where in Canada are you? It's easy to get parts for them. Try www.marinemanifold.com or go to your local OMC dealer. And yes, your photos are too big, makes for hard reading...

Re: Picked up this old gal

Yea, resolution will make a difference. However, iboats once replied to a question of mine pertaining to just that topic (pic size). Their reply was that they preferred that the pixel width did not exceed 400. A pixcel width of 600 seems to work out better though.

My resolution is set at 1024x768 and I still have to scroll over to view the pics. No complaint intended here..... just a info insertion.
