I can confirm that the Durabak needs to be scrubbed clean regularly. It is great to walk on with bare feet and is tough stuff but seems to trap dirt more than I originally thought.

Kiwigrip might be another alternative... I went with Durabak from what I've heard and can confirm it is very durable.

I currently own Frisco's 1982 SX190 Glastron he rebuilt in 2010 with Durabark. It has held up great--comfy on bare feet--cool in direct 100F sunlight. The only issue is because of it's texture, is hard to clean. I have to scrub with commet & a brush to clean. I anchor the boat at a local sand bar most summer weekends and it stays dirty most of the time. it makes no sense to scrub it clean then hang at the sand bar the next day. The boat is tucked away for the winter but can send you photos of the dirty floor if you want.View attachment 178508

Could I see the pics? I'd actually like to see it dirty. Stuck between gel coat and durabak.

If you apply one coat texture, and the other top-coats of non-texture, the dirt is easier to clean... I used a brush on the end of a broom handle to scrub and it worked well... I had 3 coats of white textured durabak on my Bilgeliner and would never use 3 coats texture again... I feel the smooth over top wouldn't trap dirt as bad and make it easier to keep clean. I've also used vinyl dye, you can see both results on the links in the treads below my signature line. A jigngrub says prep on deck is key to Durabak...

I used grey durabank and it is awsome!
then my nieghber painted his jeep with it....

I also am leaning toward using Durabak on my deck; I've watched Friscoboater's videos and I like how it looks. I plan to put down textured stuff on the deck and then cover it with a coat of smooth. I wrote Durabak and they told me the undercoats (i.e., the textured layers) can be put down using the non-UV version, which is about $30 less a gallon. The top coat of smooth Durabak is UV protected. Deck prep looks like a bear, though....

Looks like you'd need about two quarts of textured and two quarts of smooth for the average 18-20 foot runabout. Kindof expensive. Anyone use any of the non skid deck coating sold here on the I boats site?

I used 1 gallen - 2 coats did a great job on my 19 footer, and had about a cup left over, with that cup I did the small swim platform and ladde.r it to came out great and was aplyed to wood.- the deck is csm and woven rovin. with poly resin
preped real well with xyleane evan on the glass., the stuff comes with instructions ans speacial rollers.
its very non slip and in my opionion perfact for a boat deck. I may evan try and paint it this year to clean up some of the work.....
or may just get another can of durabank and do another coat.

If a gallon will do your boat and is only $135, it's cheaper than carpet or vinyl. Gel coat may be your cheapest way to go.

On another note, I found this thread about Durabak interesting... too bad it's a cliff-hanger at the end and you never find out what happened.

I really like the gel coat decks I've seen. It looks so clean and factory. I think on a freshly built deck it would be easy to apply. I'm thinking of going this route and using a few rubber bottom place mats until I get some snap in carpet.

I really like that look, too. My concern is that gel is so glossy, I was afraid that even small imperfections would be highly visible. A less glossy finish ought to conceal minor flaws better, I'd think.

Either way, adding some sort of snap-in carpeting or rubber mats is always a good possibility.

One of the good things about gloss white paint is that it doesn't show imperfections like the darker colors do, and the darker the paint the more they show.

Prep work is key to a good paint job, fairing and sanding first go a long way in making a good paint job. Fairing and sanding between coats means a lot too.

Darn prep work, been making boat building tough for a millinia....

Can't ever have too much prep. When you finally get to the 'this is the last time I'm sanding & fairing or prepping this surface' point, count on finding a few more places at some point before you lay down the final finish...

But it is a boat, not a piano. There can be limits..... But even a thick deck covering like vinyl can have print through of very poor prep work.

I think I'll go with a light grey or off white. I think a pure white would look funny against my off white cap. I hadn't thought of sanding between coats. Bit it with like a 220 by hand?

150 grit for resin type finishes, and if it clogs too easy step down to 120 grit. I use 120 for sanding epoxy resin and it works well with little to no clogging.

One thing in my favor is that I don't have that much visible floor, and its mostly open. So I can be thorough with my prep and it still won't be so bad since I just don't have a great deal of space to cover. I like the hydro turf, but I don't like that its stuck down with two sided tape. If I have something over the deck I want it easily removable so I can inspect it and so it can dry well.

I agree with that! I received a sample of the HydroTurf and it seems as though it would be extremely comfortable underfoot. I worry about adhesion, though, and I wonder how it holds up in heavy traffic areas. It also seems like it could get cut easily if you dropped something on it. Most of all, though, I think it's a bit pricy.

Re: prep work, what is best for fairing a deck when using thickened polyester resin? Cabosil and resin? Something else?

Maybe the slot for the foot of a toilet will match up pretty well to fit around a pedestal seat post, for that 'custom fit' look ..

If Target has 'em on sale, grab a few & BAM: a quick face lift of the ole' boats interior...:facepalm:

Isn't there a new hydro turf type product that's heavier w/ a rubber backing so it lays down & stays down until you lift it.... gonna have to dig to find that, but I think it was around here somewhere......
