Hey all. I have been waiting to get my pictures scanned so that I can post them for all to see. This is a restoration of my father's boat (a 78 mariner 21ft). I tried my best on it. Let me know what you think. (I will post the pics in the order of how I did the project)

Re: Pics of my restoration

Re: Pics of my restoration

And now for some descriptions of stuff:

1) I stripped the entire boat using a paint stripper from Lowes. I forget the name but it worked well. It came in a golden jar and was highly toxic.
2) For the floor, I wanted something that would not rot. In turn, I used a Trex product. The material is made of wood and plastic that is pressed together. It is garanteed to never wear away ... see you later soft spots.
3) The transom was made using two layers of 3/4 inch marine grade plywood that I treated with Interlux poly. I did three layers to make sure I had it well protected.
4) I managed to save the original wood on the boat which lines the rails and the center console. It took a lot of sanding and just as much wood filler but I was able to get the job done. I stained it dark because I like the contrast between the white paint and the dark wood.
5) I painted the exterior/interior with white Interlux topside paint. Very nice/expensive paint but it is very hard to use. It is quite thick out of the can.
6) I got a good deal on a 90 ETEC engine (paid $2000 for it installed with the binnacle controls and guages). The engine is pretty powerful for its size. I get up to 33mph with 4 adults in the boat. I know you guys prefer the older powerplants but I couldn't resist having fuel injection.
7) The name was changed to LEGASEA in rememberance of my father who passed about 15 years ago. I know its bad luck to change the name of a boat but I think the boat gods will let me pass on this one. My girlfriend painted the name on both sides by hand. It took her all day.... she was not as excited about it as I was haha.

Well other than that theres not much to say. Let me know if you guys have any questions on how I did things. I wish I had found this group earlier...it would have made a bunch of stuff much much easier.

Re: Pics of my restoration

Welcome Bay and good work on the restoration. I like the tribute to your father, very nice touch.:) Even though you see a lot of the older motors on here its not that we prefer them, just its all we can afford.;)
Beez said it best, your Dad would be pleased.

Re: Pics of my restoration

Brett welcome to the site. I hear you on the wishing you had found the site before your restoration. There is a ton of info here that would have been valuable while doing the project. Live and learn. A new 90-hp sounds like a great motor for that thing. Good on fuel and peace of mind while out on the water.

Edit your profile to add where you?re from.
And thanks for the pictures, nice boat.

Welcome aboard, and good job. That Etec will be a breeze to winterize too. Except for doing the lower unit oil and greasing the prop shaft, the motor does its own winterizing. Really cool the way it does it.

Yea the ETEC is a pretty unique engine when it comes to winterization. The one I have is an 04 model which is the first year they came out I believe. It has been very reliable so far even though I havnt had it too long.

I have some more pictures that I dug up. Enjoy

some more

are those wooden planks on top of the rails? running stern to almost bow. Looks nice,i was thinkin of putting boards along the inside of mine running from the floor to the top of rail,to make boat more stable and limit flexing, which mine has a lot of.

Re: Pictures of my 78 Mariner 21ft restoration

Yes, there is wood running down the rails, on top of the splashwell, and surrounding the top of the console. I wish I could say that the wood lining was my idea but it was all there when my father purchased the boat in 88. He was the second owner so I'm not sure if they were a factory option or if the PO put it in. As a matter of fact does anyone know if you could purchase these boats equipt with factory wood?

Your rig looks like it is coming together nicely. Let me know if you have any questions about how I did things

Great looking job, aluminum hulls are great to work with, you don't have the flexing problems you have with the fiberglass hulls, during restoration.

Hope you have plenty of safe and enjoyable time on the water.
