When I ping a location and the little window comes up to show you the info on the ping.
What do I have to set to keep this little window up?
Ever time I ping someplace, it will disappear before I can read where or what the info is telling me.
Just need to know what to set to keep the little info window up till I close it.
Thanks.

Re: PING

Personally, I open a "DOS" window to these types of things. Either click on the "Command Prompt" icon on you Start menu or do a Start|Run and enter "command" for Win98 or "cmd" for Win2000/XP. When your done, type Exit to close it. I use a DOS window so much, I've put a shortcut to it on the Quick Launch bar. The "young crowd" at work make fun of me for using DOS so much.

Re: PING

SBN, type the word "command" in there without the quotes. This will bring up a DOS prompt/ You will see a "C:\" with a flashing cursor.

Now you can use your ping command.

The ping timings will come back.

To close the DOS window when done, type exit.

Hotbyte, I know exactly what you mean. I do the same thing. It sure is nice to have comlete control instead of windows doing everything for you.

Re: PING

Spinner_Bait Nut, that's just where you need to be. At the C:\Windows\Desktop prompt just type in the ping command like "ping www.rvtrader.com" without the quotes and then hit the Enter key. When finished "pinging" systems, just type "exit" without quotes and hit return.

Sorry Hot Byte, I get that far and it won't let me type nothing. Must not have something set right.

Re: PING

It sounds like you are getting to command prompt and should be able to type commands. Not sure what could be wrong without seeing PC. There are several Windows GUI ping utilities on the web. Perhaps one of those would better meet your need if your more into "point and click". Here's one at tucows.com called PingSX2 1.03. Its cheap too (free).

Relentless, "ping" is a network utility that allows one computer to send a small packet of information to another computer to test that there is a good network connection between the two computers. I believe it was originally an Unix tool and all Unix tool have wierd names. It will tell you the time, usually in milliseconds, that it took for the data packet to travel across the network. So, a lower "ping time" is better. Many internet gamers use ping time to find the best server to play on.

Yea relentless, it will look something like this.
Ping statistics for 204.246.129.168 [www.iboats.com]:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 275ms, Maximum = 343ms, Average = 298.8ms

Re: PING

Thanks Hot Byte.
I did a help search on my computer and it said something that I might have to remove some things in my start menu and I did not want to do that.

Re: PING

on your start menu, you most likely have a MS dos prompt. click on that prompt and a dos window will appear. type in the dos command of your choice, in this case: ping www.iboats.com good luck............

Re: PING

Read above post flashback. I did all that and there is some setting not letting me type anything in the command box once I get it up.
That's ok, I downloaded the pingsx2 and it works just fine.

Re: PING

SpinnerBait Nut,
Not quite sure why you need to ping something, but you might want to try tying "tracert" (trace route)at the command prompt.

Syntax is tracert destination
example: tracert www.iboats.com

This will return a list showing all the hops the connection had to make getting from your computer to the destination's computer. looks similar to the output from ping, except it lets you see the bottlenecks in the network traffic.

Its a pretty rudimentary utility, but it comes standard on the windows opsys.

Nav

Re: PING

Sorry SBN. I am not sure what is wrong with the command prompt window. The only thing I can think of that would not let you type in that window is it is not selected. I have seen windows that come up, but are not selected. Make sure the top window bar is the dark slected color, or just click in the window. If this does not work, then try one of the utilities that Hotbyte mentioned. Both ways of getting into a command window work the same.
Hotbyte is right about the prompt. Sorry, I should have mentioned it may look a little different.

Re: PING

Thanks navigator, that works also, but will not stay up for me to look at.
It closes the window as soon as it is done and that is what I am trying to figure out.
What I have to set to stop it from doing that.
My ping window does the same thing after completing ping.

Re: PING

SBN, one idea on how to get it to work. In some versions of Windows, I have experienced what you have here. A way to get around that is to create a shorctut to do what you want. This lets you set some options up front. Usualy, if a window stays up long enough, you can right click on it and it will let you set some oprions of which close when done or on exit one of them. Unfortunatel, the window may close to quickly to get this done. To get around this, create a shortcut then right click on it to set options for the PIF (Program Information File).

1. Right click on the desktop and click new/shortcut.

2. In the path, type the word command.

3. Click next, give it a name and click finish.

4. Right click on the new shortcut and uncheck close on exit.

5. Click ok, then try it out. You may want to even type ping and then your site to run the ping automatically, then it should stay up afterward.

Just a thought.

Re: PING

Thanks scoop, that done it. I did not even have to do anything about the closing part. It stayed up till I closed it.
I think it's kinda neat to ping different places and see what kinda speed it is doing. :D

Like mentioned earlier, now try a tracert and see all the hops it goes through.
