Get over it. Don't start an arguement just to quash a thread with ideas you don't like.

If I didn't like the ideas, I'd respond to them. I'm not trying to quash the thread. As I recall, it's about whether pirates need to be punished more rigorously, not whether a religious affiliation merits a death sentence.

I think pirates deserve more punishment than they're getting. I think the British are being wimps.

I also think that part of the answer lies in the private sector, and in ships looking out for themselves. I like those decibel cannon things. Very cool!

The point of the thread is PIRATES. Don't kill it because of arguing.

Today a Japanese tanker was fired upon by pirates in the Gulf of Aden. It left a 2cm hole in the hull. Second incident in as many days

I have never understood why shipping companies don't put security forces on their freighters, armed to the teeth. You would probably have no shortage of former special forces guys who would LOVE to do it.

I'd love to do it, myself (though I'm not former military).

Did the home office say anything about not killing the scum? Seems to me that is a logical thing to do if you are ordered not to take prisoners.

"Take no prisoners" has been a directive to kill the enemy for centuries.

That was exactly my first reaction and probably that of many british naval officers.
Besides this is the language that most of these pirates understand perfectly well......

There should be no other punishment for piracy on the high seas than immediate execution.....
No trial, no nothing.......
In fact the pirate craft should be sent to the bottom, no exceptions....
This goes for Christian & Buddhist pirates as well.....;)

That's what finally happened after the War of 1812 when the British, French, Dutch and Americans joined together to clean out the Mediterranean Sea of the Barbary Pirates once and for all.
Funny you should bring that up. There does seem to be a bit of deja vu here. Something in common between then and now. If I could just put my finger on it.

Let's see--you have multi-national shipping going through an area where a degree of lawlessness is the norm ashore, giving pirates a place to hide out. The problem is that back in the 19th century, you could draw a direct connection between the acts of piracy and the governments that supported them. I don't know that the Somali government is complicit in these activities, and it seems they have bigger fish to fry right now than fighting piracy.

I do know that some of the ships in the region use armed Somali guards to defend against the pirates, so they're not all bad.

Nope. I'm just not seeing what's "obvious." Can you point it out while staying on topic, or are you content to just sit around and snicker like a bunch of schoolboys saying "he doesn't get it" when in fact, you don't either?

It occurs to me that you might be referring to the "war on terror" with the implication that we should "wipe 'em out," but that's such a ridiculous idea that it can't possibly be what you mean.

I'll ask again. Are there any governments giving aid to these pirates? Can you draw a connection between their illegal activities and the nations that they are based in?

Killing pirates because they're engaged in piracy is one thing. Killing everyone with a peg leg and an eye patch because you suspect they might be a pirate is a completely different thing.
