Just read the morning news.
Evidently Samolian pirates are on the rampage (still) with 5 hijackings in the past week.
Also reported "A NATO flotilla of seven vessels is also in the Gulf of Aden to help the U.S. 5th Fleet in anti-piracy patrols and to escort cargo vessels. The 5th Fleet said it has repelled about two dozen pirate attacks since Aug 22."
Here's the article if interested...

If you're going to/from the Red Sea & Indian Ocean, pack some extra artillery.

Re: Pirates

i gotta admit.....

being from canada....and a lake boater now..(mid sized lakes)..(used to be on the ocean, west coast canada)
the idea of real life pirates seems....well far fetched....

i know the danger is very real.....and can understand the possible reasons to hi jack someones boat and kill the crew.

but it just seems like somthing out of the movies....kind a sureal....ya know what im talking about?

i think id have to change my under wear if i was ever to run into a real life gang on the seas.....

Re: Pirates

Global Maritime Security is a booming business. Private shipping companies are hiring armed militia to escort cargo through "troubled waters". Some even maintain an armed party onboard fulltime. Training at the US Merchant Marine Academy now includes security methods. The USCG now provides armed training to foreign countries plagued by modern piracy. These "new" pirates have the backing of corrupt rebel gov'ts making the threat a real concern to US flag ships.

Repelled? That way they can catch the next vessel coming by? Sinking seems a more definitive solution.

Rumor has it that the U.S. is sending Steven Segal over there to remedy the situation.;)

Re: Pirates

They should use the same tactic as they do with mad cow, shoot, shovel and shut up. Send a bunch of decoy boats out with several mercenary's armed with RPG's on each of them. After a few pirates were "lost at sea" the others might get the hint.

Re: Pirates

I have been considering a career change. Need something a little more active then sitting behind a desk. Ok I'm in, when do we leave. :)

As soon as we get enough money together to buy a fully equipped destroyer. I'm getting giggly thinking about it, what could be better for a job? get to play with big boat and big guns and you're not a G.I. :D

Re: Pirates

The best idea I have seen comes from the Germans. Don't know if it was WWI or II, but they would convert freighters into gun ships. The catch is the guns were behind special doors and hatches. The commerce raider would play possum until Allied ships came over to help out, then the doors would open and the guns start blasting.

Otherwise, I think a constant patrol of predator drones would help out, any ship leaving the Somali coast that goes more than, lets say 5 mi, does not return.

I'm ready to sign up for the Freedom LCS, too. Whooops, forgot my age.

I read a little about marine radar, and the newer systems of today are
supposed to be able to detect smaller vessels. I am amazed that the ships
traveling in known pirate infested waters are not using security measures.
Maybe they just don't care, until it's too late...

Re: Pirates

There seems to be more behind this pirate game than meets the eye.
This oil tanker was hijacked hundreds of miles away from Somalia deep in the Indian Ocean.
Ever wonder how these pirates knew where to find the tanker and how powerful a vessel they had, so they could not only catch up with the tanker but also keep themselves hidden from the tanker's radar screens, never mind being able to board such a behemoth.
Somebody somewhere is selling or donating information to highly trained and very capable pirate/sailors.
Is this just another terror organization's way to fill up their piggy bank? Or are we kept in the dark about something nasty happening in the open seas?

Re: Pirates

The Oil still belongs to a the shipper (a OPEC member) and the tanker like most international ships is probably registered in Liberia or the Bahamas or somewhere other than the US so they don't pay us taxes. So its not the US CONCERN TO PROTECT THEM. THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE OPEC TO SOLVE.

Re: Pirates

It just dawned on me that a local Somali ultra religious warlord and his army captured a harbor in Somalia and that is where they are taking this super tanker.
This warlord is widely seen as having very close connections with El qaida.
