they have their drawbacks, you MUST properly torque them then recheck the every 20 hours. they tend to crack a lot on large HP applications. the plus side is its dang cheap to build. the rubber hubbed is more expensive to manufacture. good luck and keep posting
PS neither hub was really designed for impact absorption just ease of manufacture.

Rodbolt, One of the selling points of the plastic hub is that the boatowner can rehub the prop himself. To that end, is it the plastic that fails when you hit something? Can you buy just the plastic or must you buy the whole hub kit for $40?

yes the flo-torque hub is avalible for about 17 dollars by itself.
most consumers wont torque it to 55 ft lbs and if its loose it fails rapidly. I replace a lot of them and have learned to despise them but soon its about all that will be about. its a matter of beans and bean counters.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks for the input, I am going to re-hub my SS prop and keep the aluminum with plastic hub as a spare.

Mac

Re: Plastic vs Rubber hub

Rodbolt, In 30 years of boating, I have only had two hubs fail on me. Both just seemed to wear out, since I didn't hit anything. One happened in 1999 on an original prop on my old pin drive '58 Johnson, so I forgave it. The other on a cold day in November, on a two-year old Rapture. This I find hard to forgive.

I guess the question is, should a rubber-hubbed prop on a normal motor ever fail due to motor power alone?

PS I hit a lot of sand and silt, but never spun a hub.

Re: Plastic vs Rubber hub

I have spun 4 hubs on three motors in my life:
Rude 35 hp 2X on a 13 Whaler probably 1000 hours
Yamaha 200 way over loaded hammer down, owner gets in the sand all the time.
Johnson 225 This hung on davits in the sun for 13 years and I spun it after a hard test run and loaded Saturday cruse.

I have never hit something and had one go, it has always been while under cruse.

But this is my first plastic hub. I am curious to see how it holds up.

Question, Why is proper torque so important on the plastic hub set-up?

Mac
