playing w/fire?

History.Motor sat 5yrs(winterized).Mechanic had it running after imeller change, new gas within 10sec. first turn of the key.I run marine stabil.Have used it 3 times.Doesnt miss, not very hard to cold start, turns 6,000rpms(have new prop to drop to 5500 to install before next outing). The only issue is that it dies if i come off WOT too quickly.I have to raise fast idle lever to restart, but then fires right up.Shut off fish, turn key and go again. If I "feather"it down off WOT,no issues. So,the question.I know lean condition is BAD.Am i at risk?do I need to pull carbs and clean(i cant and mech. wants $100/carb just to clean)or would a true lean condition be more noticable than my one issue? also,at my mechanics shop rate of $45/hr,does $100/carb to clean only sound fair?sorry, but moneys tight at the moment.I will get done if advised, though.thanks all.

kinda scary pulling back all the way from 6000 to idle i bet....get a lot of wash over the back of the boat do ya?if that wash is rushing up the ex. ports at the back of the engine it will do as you say it does....just how often do ya do full throttle shut downs?

Chopping the throttle rapidly can cause water to enter the exhaust tube and get in the lower 2 cylindersas well as a backwash as suggested, as can launching it to quick with engine trimmed down.

Re: playing w/fire?

interesting.Wasnt expecting those assesments.Just want to add that ive fished many tournaments as a non boater and pretty much all boaters ive been with go flying up to their areas full out, then cut her down and idle last few ft.Never have i been in one that died on slowing rapidly like that. Also,i trim down and pull back to @3500-4000 till i get close and then back off.Not actually from 6000.Actually i think ive gone down to @2500 and still if i take down to idle from there quickly it will do the same.Im not doubting any of your comments, just wasnt even considering your replies till i heard them b/cause of my past experiences. So,am i right to assume there would be more noticable running lean issues than what im having?

And thanks faztbullet for your reply as i value your input as well as j martins and couple others. You guys seem to really know your stuff and help out many boaters w/your knowledge(if they listen)and i for one appreciate it.

You're asking for problems if you slam on the brakes from wot.

Bass tourney fisherman are a strange lot. I enjoy fishing as much as the next guy but I have to relax while doing it. This up tight balls to the walls every split second counts stuff is not for me.

thanks, dave. And I agree w/your comment.Let me say this.scenario.pulling up to my "spot",have slowed from WOT,maybe 2500 or so,if i go straight to idle from there itll die.If i back to maybe 1200 or so,itll stay running.Im not going from"balls to the wall" to 800rpms instantly.still same thoughts?

Re: playing w/fire?

Might indicate a carb/fuel delivery problem. Try it and hit the choke while going to idle. See if that helps it. That would confirm a lean condition.
