Re: please help: how to stop porpoisng

I had a chance to test things this morning with two pasengers in my boat. We were sitting across the back, full tank of fuel and all the average fishing stuff. Anything under about 3,500, with boat on plain, it would porpose if I trimmed at all. If I was at 4,000-4,500, I could trim very slightly, maybe just a couple bumps. Flat out I could trim all the way out.

LD,<br /><br />"Porpoising" is a sign of too much weight aft.

Oh, Im note desputing that at all, I agree wholeheartedly. Im just trying to help him understand his boat as its exactly like mine.<br /><br />However I would like to interject something into your Quote. <br /><br />Porpoising is the sign of too much weight aft for the amount of HP you have to compensate for it.

Gentlemen, I believe you are both right. I have been studying other threads on this subject and have come up with some conclusions that I will take suggestions to: Underpowered at the weight of my boat will cause it to porpoise. Overpowered with the bow down, may cause the same. It is in my learning to control the boat that will solve the problem. There are too many boats like mine that I have seen blazing across the water as smooth as silk. I have to keep trying, if nothing else, to shut up a guy with a 75hp Suzuki powered bowrider laughing at me and asking for a race.

Have not been able to get out yet because of a broken oil reservoir cap to be replaced tomorrow, I hope and because of rainy weather.

LD,<br /><br />I agree with your addition to the quote.<br /><br />My first clue was that he had two people sitting directly in the back.

Re: please help: how to stop porpoisng

:) Thank you, thank you everyone for helping me to learn my boat. I took all the advice out on the water. Had the boat fully trimmed down, pushed it 2/3 of travel on control. It popped up on plane immediately, started to bounce, tapped the trim up once, twice, three times and she leveled off. Looked at the speedo and was doing 45mph. Thought it should go faster, found I had more travel in the throttle and got to 55mph @ 5000 to 5500 rpms before I began to approach sitting boaters. The lake is not big enough now. This with the tracker speedo, 23 pitch aluminum prop, and just me in the boat. time and distance are meaningless. Thank you all again.

Awesome, I knew that boat had it in it, you can acheive over 60MPH with the right setup and prop.

Just to add an aside.... if your boat starts porpoising under the identical condition during which it didn't previously porpoise, look for some "hidden" weight gain in the stern. In my case, I have a Gil bracket and the drain plug had a crack in it which caused the bracket to take on water on the inside - no way you could spot this one!<br /><br />I have also heard of transom or hull bottom layups where the coring material got soaked for whatever reason (maybe something as simple as a fitting not being properly sealed at all point where it passes through the layup). Again no way will you see this unless you weigh your boat....
