I have a 76 Johnson 85 hp. I have rebuilt the carbs, changed coils, power pack, fuel lines. I tried spark test with the plugs in and it won't fire on the right side but it does with the plugs out. The guy at the marina said something may needed to be adjusted under the flywheel. Any idea what this is? What size nut is on the flywheel so I can by the socket and remove. I do have a inpack wrench. It will start if I chock it. it will idle on high and when I turn it down it dies. I can get up to speed sometimes on the water and it will just stop.

The flywheel nut is 1-5/16. Depending on the nut, you may need the socket to be thinwall or you may need to grind the outer edge of a standard socket.

The sensor coils sometimes need to be aligned so that they pass more closely to the sensor magnets on the center ring of the flywheel.

Before you do that, check all of the ground wires on the engine, especially the grounding straps between the rack that holds the ignition coils and the engine, and the grounding straps between the rack and the cylinder heads.

Usually, if all cylinders fire with the plugs out, the problem is that the engine is not turning fast enough with the plugs in; bad battery cables alone can cause that.
