Schematic, I have a good contact at Bomabadier here in Oz. He had 31 years service with OMC. Should you need detailed specs of this tool please let me know as I will be seeing him on Monday. Just dont tell him I run a Kiekhafer. He was production manager for 12 years so he knows his stuff and waffles on about grand old tooling machines that used to take a good toolsetter 3 days to setup. I can listen to his stories for hours on end.

Re: Please, I need a favor

I know some guys are gonna disagree with this, but here goes. I go about shimming OMC upper bearing kinda on a guess basis. Unlike shiming the prop shaft, where you better get it right at first to avoid disassembly a bunch of times, the upper bearing shim is easy to change after its together. So, i take a guess. If its too tight, you will feel it, it wont spin or will spin tight. If its too loose, it'll have play up and down. I make it tight, then shim till it spins freely, then maybe add a hair more. Now, i know it ain't the proper way, but it's never came back to bite me, either.

Re: Please, I need a favor

Mike m2: good point! Only problem is I'm a little paranoid. I don't see any reference in the manual on gear mesh, tooth patterns or backlash. Maybe my manual sucks? I've heard a few boats on the water that have a distinctive whine that you can hear in the distance.(is that just engine noise from a looper?)
Maybe I'm way off base, but the first instinctive reaction I get is "When I change components in a gear-box, pinion depth must be bang on". Although the gears aren't hypoid, I'd feel better with a spec.
The only spec I can find is this darn tool idea. I can appreciate your method if you've done alot of these puppy's and have a 'feel' for there backlash, but I need a spec. so as I can sleep at night....LOL.(I would prefer a backlash spec...12" arm attached to shaft>measure play with dial gauge....that sort of thing)
What do other people do?????????...and how do they sleep at night!!!!!!........LOL

Thanks Clanton:
If this is easier, it will do as well.....I can whittle the tool out in a hurry. I think this is a better way of measuring anyway(takes the housing dimension into account)
Re: Please, I need a favor

This has always been a mystery to me. They want you to shim the pinion out of the gearcase. So are they saying ALL cases are machined EXACTLY the same but the gears and shafts aren't? Hummm.....

I know a bunch of guys who do it like Mike M2 with no problems but it takes experience to get the feel.

Just a thought!

Re: Please, I need a favor

ditto ditto Dhadley:
They sure as heck don't machine each housing the same.(or shafts for that matter) This method is a "one size fits all" Backlash would be better, but you'd have to do it on the forward and reverse gears, one at a time to get each to have proper lash. OEM must figure its like "horse-shoes and hand-grenades"(close enough!!)

Re: Please, I need a favor

I talked to one tech who uses blue dye on gear to check gear contact, with the shaft pushed upward, the gear pattern should be close to the center of the farward gear. I also talked to 2 other techs who said if it felt good it was ok, they could not describe felt good.

Re: Please, I need a favor

I can describe 'felt good'.....LOL!! *** I like the idea of taking a tooth pattern!! The only thing is, being as fussy as I am, I'd also want to double check the depth with the tool dimension(just to see if common sense prevails) If a guy sets a few up using the tooth pattern, and finds that they reasonably coincide with the tool, its the way to go for silent operation(I would think)
Hope you find something.......woywoyboy is looking as well.
:)
