Pocket core plug ?

Hi:
1989 90hp Evinrude.
I used a punch to pry out pocket core plugs. In one pocket the punch slip ever so slightly into one of the holes that allows gas to enter throat. It took out a little nick from inside the pocket core, and not all the way thru. I took a small file and smoothed up the nick. Would this have anything to do with the motor not getting enough fuel when I go to throttle it up in the water? It seems to run on trailer with muffs just fine even when I give it throttle. Fuel pump is working fine and no leaks.
Thanks,
Lee

Don't thottle it up without a load, damage happens thataway.

Get a spark GAP tester and make sure you get good spark with it set to 7/16th inch gap,

if you get good spark then check link/sync,

then retrace your steps over the carb job.

But sounds like you have a dead cyl. no fire.

Thanks jonesg,

I Was having some problems with the spark on all cylinder's. I checked all connection, used sparks gap tester and then removed the coils. Where they mounded to the block, was very corroded, being I submerged the engine in salt water.

But since I have picked the motor, (or cleaned it out), rewired it, rebuilt the carbs, cleaned fuel pump and cleaned out tank and lines. It ran fine for 3 or 4 weeks.

I think it may be in the link/sync I did this past weekend. I have an Omc manual. I followed Joe Reeves Timing and then followed the manual. When I tried to set the cam follower pickup timing to 4 degrees, I noticed it sounded like it was running out of fuel and I had to adjust it back some. It sounds that way when I throttle up on the water. I will go back threw it and see if I can figure it out what I've done wrong.
Thanks'

Sounds like its not the carb booboo, but you can test it by spraying some gas into that carb throat when it bogs down. Or bump the choke.

How did submerge your engine in salt water ?

theres =IS= a stupid human tricks forum ya know?:p

Hi: jonesg,

If not the carb then what? I can press the bulb and it will run a little better but there's no air leaks and the bulb is pretty tight when I do press it. You think it might be the pick up timing it sounds about the same way when it's bogging down when I throttle up as it did when I over adjusted the pick up timing. I never could get it quit right.

I had just bought my boat and on the second time out my bilge pump stopped working. After a couple of hours one of the girls on the boat had to take a leak. I run the bow up on Bald head Island and let her off to find a bush. With the ocean currents and boat activity I took on a couple of wakes on my stern. I then backed up to turn around and was going to pull the plug after throttling up and let the water drain out. The area where the bilge sets I thought was a 2' x 3' area. It turns out that it runs a the way to the bow. So what I thought was a little water was a hole lot water. So when I throttled it up the stern went under water and in 10 seconds I was swimming and my boat was capsized.

I had it back home and cleaned out within 4 hours.

Make sure you don't have trash in the high speed orifice or passage.
That is your main supply passage, not the tiny holes behind the plug.

Squeezing the bulb will force fuel to pass at a higher rate and momentarily overcome the restriction.

Thanks: crxess,
I will pull them back off and take another look. I've just rebuilt the carbs soaked them, removed and cleaned orifices all 6 in each carb. I know it sounds like it may be the orifices but I don't believe so. Strange things can happen, after I rebuilt them I had a problem with one, over loading. The needle retaining clip had slid in between one of the float pin ears on the carb and would not let the float rise up and shut fuel off. I will check and see, something could have gotten in there.
Thanks again,
Lee
