according to the seloc manual my point gap to the no 2 cylinder will be different from the point gap of the no 1 cylinder. i have set it according to the book and the no 2 cylinder point gap is a little wider. from what everyone tells me is that both point gap settings are .020. why is the book wanting me to change the setting, and is it correct?

motor serial number is 555hf its a 1973 55hp 2 cylinder points and coils mounted horizontally under neath the flywheel. thanks

I gapped my 55 to 0.20 on both points.

Make sure they are clean, and they close evenly. Also i have found they are very touchy. Off just by a bit and the motor will tell you.

Perhaps the Seloc has a typo or you misread it. We'll give both of you the benefit of the doubt--LOL

There is usually a disclaimer that it is essential to adjust both sets of points equally because a difference of only .0015 will equate to 1 degree different timing between the cylinders.

If your 73 has two lines on the flywheel 180 degrees apart, these lines are used to check the timing on each cylinder.

Re: point gap on 55hp chrysler

0.20 is what I have both of the cylinders set at on my 73 model 555HF 55hp. I messed with this a few times thinking I would get more power/better idle, etc.. but 0.20 is where mine is happiest. Buzz is right though, the points are touchy on this motor. Once you find the happy spot on the points mark it for reference. Also, just for giggles make sure your condensors are tight before you put the flywheel back on. I have had more trouble with them walking out of the clamps than you want to know ( replaced 3 last year). I found a little rtv drop on one side of condensor keeps them from doing this :) AND! torque the flywheel nut to 90ft lbs! You will shear the woodruff key if it is not torqued to this ( that is said from experience) :)
