Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

Dang, I miss racing. I'm hoping to get back into it, at least a couple races next year. I sold my Y102, but have a standing offer for a Y302 should I decide to show up at one of our NE races with my boat, suit & brain bucket...

Most I was ever able to get out of my KG4H was high thirties, but I go about 240 lbs. and it was running on an old 25SSH hull. Poor motor was doing all it could to get the boat out of the hole and over the hump... It took a Merc 25SS to get that boat to pack some air and really fly - it was an old Hedlund...

Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

I had an old plywood runabout years ago with a Mark 20 on it that used to fly although I have no idea how fast it was.It would bring tears to your eyes but I didn't have a speedometer back then nor did I know anyone who did.Maybe Laddies or Scaaty would have some idea based on the pics of the hull and I will include the link from another post to look at.

It is post #76.
I still have the Mark 20,also a Mark 25 and other assorted parts to them.
I hope someday to acquire another small boat to run them on.
I am putting a transom in my current hull,a Glastron JetFlite V143 that has been running a Merc 650 4 cylinder which it is rated for.I have a good deal on an 1150 that might find its way on to that boat for some excitement,we shall see how brave I am when the time comes:))Ron G

1975 Evinrude 20HP w/dinged up alum prop goes 27MPH on my 3.4m Avon inflatable.
I bought an SS prop but it was too much pitch- belongs on a 25 I guess.

The Sevylor inflatable in the pic behind the yellow boat goes about 16 mph with it's 1965 7.5 Mcculloch.

Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

How long is your boat, Jason? 22 mph sounds a little low.

My update...1954 Evinrude Super Fastwin 15 hp with a 8.5 x 8.5 prop hit 36kmh / 23 mph.

Nice pics, Scaaty.

Dang, Beaton! I was hoping I had it right. My other 18 is about the same speed. The boat is really small for an 18--only about 12.5 ft. It's narrow, too, but is a little rough on the bottom. I would think it should fly! I don't know, my 18's do seem pretty worn out but run great. Also, my Dad's brand new Yamaha 25hp 2-stroke only goes 26.7 mph with me and him and 2 shotguns on a 14'36" Duracraft in nice shape. I'm suprised ya'll are getting such high numbers like the fellow with the 20hp above. Should I check compression? What else could be keeping it low? Maybe my prop is a little bent? It doesn't have much vibration. I just got my '58 18 evinrude in.. the darn thing won't run and I think it's the coils. It has a nice prop on it so when I get it running I'll post the speed on it... BTW I want to see some pics of that 15--I like it. curious--is it bad to post pics on iboats because it takes up so much memory? I'm not seeing as much motors as I had hoped... thanks for yours, I've got 'em saved.

KJD, nice shot of your speed displaying watch, but why not transom shot of the Mccollough?

Here is a friend of mine that runs a rubber boat at the Top O Michigan Marathon. This is what 74 mph looks like in a rubber boat!!

1958 evinrude 18hp. runs 23.8 mph but GPS hit 24.6mph a couple of times. I think that may be the top speed since trees may have been blocking the satellites except for those 2 flickers of 24.6. I could only run WOT for about 100yds before running out of space, may try again tomorrow.

I have a 115 HP Johnson 2-stroke V4 on an 18-foot runabout...max speed I can get on the GPS is 35 MPH. Is this slower than what you would expect? I am thinking maybe a couple of the cylinders aren't firing.

Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

Update: 1958 18hp evinrude fastwin pushed 26.0 mph on GPS. It was on a 12 ft., 36" wide aluminum boat. The GPS actually said 27.8 mph for a while but I don't know, couldn't get it to do it very long. Here's a couple of pics for those who might be interested:

WOW Jbjennings- I have a '57 version of the same motor and my dad has a 12' Lund of the same dimensions....if only the two were to meet. I love the transom shot too, she surely is a "fast twin" and in my view one of the sexiest things Evvy made!

Ha Ha! I had to pry the tiller out of my nephews hand to take him back to camp once we got out of the channel (he doesn't know my "run" and would probably take off the lower unit with a stump). That 12 footer is nice with two people but is way overpowered if you run it wide open with one person. I couldn't help trying it for a short distance, though. You can't beat a good 'ol johnson or evinrude! I'm about to paint that '58 18 and will post a pic when I do.
Thanks for the comment--I'm really proud of it now that I have it fixed. I checked the l.u. oil after that run and it was crystal clear clean--I was PLEASED.

to say 35mph-40mph?

Another one to the list...

Freshly tuned 1953 Evinrude Big Twin 25 hp on a 14.5' Springbok aluminium hull 37 kmh / 23 mph.

On this boat the Big Twin performs slightly better than a 1987 Johnson 20 hp, about the as a 1983 Johnson 25 hp, and not as good as a 1988 Johnson 30 hp.

Here is a short video.

I have a 2000 70hp Johnson 17" prop on a 1999 Lund 1650 Fisherman. The boat will do 32 mph at 5500 rpm.

Re: Poll - How quick do your old outboards push?

WBeaton,
That was a neat film of your 25hp. I'm totally disappointed I wasn't able to get my '55 25hp evin. delivered. I wonder if they make a prop that'll let that motor rev a little higher. I bet it would carry 5 people at close to the same speed with the prop it has on it. What was that old 5.5 in there for up front? Insurance or another test motor? :D:D

Liked it!
