as suggested, here is the poll on operating and maintenance costs.
Idea is to convey to all that those costs do exist, and they can vary.
We don't want to over play them, although some folks have sold out
because of them. All the same, boating is to be enjoyed!

Huh?

Are you asking costs of the boats we own?

Beer -

Operating costs are costs like fuel for the boat and towing vehicle, and
usually anything related to the actual boating event.

Maintenance costs are costs related to motor and boat tune-up and fix-it
costs. Insurance and slips could really go either way.

They are combined, anyway.

Cost of the boat is not included in either.

Well...... don't fit into your survey. I easily spend anywhere from $3-5K a year but certainly not a crusing pleasure boat / cuddy cabin.

Dingbat,

I was very general in categories, and the cost range is the main item.
You could still vote in the cost category, regardless of type of boat/usage.
A post is even more appreciated than a vote.

Thanks!
:)

As I posted in the other thread, I haven't quite had my boat for a full year yet but I did get some good boating in last season and I never really spent that much. Biggest single expense so far was $60 at Walmart for a boat cover!

I've never really thought about my expenses but given the fact I'm on the water twice a week, every week, they're not that bad. Your boat and motor setup is gonna dictate your expenses obviously, my f115 sips gas, I may burn on average 7.5 gals per trip so I might be looking at $120 a month in gas, maybe another $10 for fuel additives and maybe another $20 for overall all maintenance of boat, motor and trailer. Pretty cheap for something that maikes me happy.

I boat three weeks out of the month from June untill November and I'm on the water nearly ever day during those three weeks. Given Insurance, Winter Storage, Maintenance and fuel I am pushing $1,000 a year. I use the boat for Fishing as well as pleasure cruising either on a 189 acre lake or about twice a season on a 9,600 acre lake.

Guessing just over a grand a year. I included:

Insurance - $293/year (agreed value)
Winterizing maintenance by dealer (boat, motor, trailer) - $279+tax/year
Indoor storage - $300/6 months
Gas - $150/year (115hp Merc 4-stroke; good economy; often use trolling motor)

Did not include:

Fishing stuff - for 2 people (lures, line, bait, license, etc) - $150/year
Replacement prop - is sitting in boat locker, but did not include it's cost

I probably spend $500/year on boat fuel and oil, $100/year on parts or trailer tires or whatever. Registration for boat and trailer about $50. Then add gas for tow vehicle... It is not hard to imagine I spend well over $1K/yr on boating, mostly for fishing purposes.

Tacklewasher - I would say yes.

anything and everything that has to do with the boat. Whether it's a new motor or a new wakeboard or a new life jacket, line/rope, sound system etc. Doesn't matter if it's a necesity or not.

Re: Poll on operating and maintenance costs -

We have a budget we go by since we have been doing this for a year or two :D

We put away now for next years slip fee and any foreseen repairs to the boat. This year a drive bellows, impeller, shower faucet, water filter, oil/filter, and 75 gallons of fresh gas. Slip fees, parts and fuel $1487 is pretty close to what we budget each year.

Geez, a slip up here runs $3G and up. So there's a start....

That said if I calculate my loan payments, fuel, maintenance on both the boat and truck, easily over that 5G, take the boat payments out, and much less. I know last year on the old 13' with 50hp on the back was probably around that $500-1000 mark, with the new prop and rebuilt carbs (I do my own work)....hehe...choose your poison...

Then I'll have to up my numbers considerably. Averaged over 5 years

Boat Payment = Way to much!!!
Fishing tackle = $1,000
Insurance = $675
Fuel and Oil = $2,700
General hull maintenance = $300
Electronics repair/ replacement = $750
Motor repairs and maintenace - $600

WOW!!!! I fish a 25 ft MAKO WA with a 300 HPDI eng. Round trip to fishing hole is about 60 NM or about 30 gal gas for @ $60. 2 stroke oil if i use the good stuff for the trip is another $25. I usually get lifted in at a marina rather then use the public ramp for a cost of another $25 Bait is another $10, Lost tackle, broke off hooks, rigs, line replacement is $10

Thats $130 a trip for about 40 trips a year for $5200

Services annually (every 200 hrs by mechanic and 100 hrs by me) is $600 including my do it yerself semi annual.

Cleaning products $100 a year? Replacement parts /maintenance is $200 -$300 ??
Insurance is $400

Tow boat US $116

Boat taxes and registration wont go there???? Boat depreciation costs ??? ( I bought her for cash),
Did you have to cut away a stuck anchor ( i did a few weeks ago) $100 for anchor chain and rode but not a yearly cost i hope ?

Wont even go to costs of fishing supplies such as rods and reels, lost sunglasses and hats overboard, sunscreen, bug spray, tools or knives i left on board to long and rusted, the camera that got wet and never dried right etc.

So I just plugged that in my calculator (using $250 for replacement part/maint) and came up with $6666!! I knew my boat was the DEVIL!!!!!

LOL

But I am going fishing tommorow and will go clean /prep boat for about an hour now even though I cleaned her post use. My fishing buddy will give me $40 (we will be out about 8 hrs) and bring the Ice and he will wonder if I am asking to much from him.
