JDA...

Looking good brother! Just a quick question/statement about the HUGE wrap-around bench seat...is it modular? Make sure you can get it out of your basement! Wish I lived closer, I'd come over and help you out and drink all your barley pops (most anyway!)!

Look forward to more progress!

That is all!

it is 2 pieces...the right hand side separates and I checked to make sure it will go through the door! I plan to have it bolt together on site, thanks for looking out, woulda felt really silly if I had a pontoon seat stuck in my basement!

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

Okay, so I have tried like 6 different types of fabric marking pencils, and markers...and none of them will stay on my vinyl long enough to pleat more than 2-3 pleats before the rest of my lines have vanished....would really like not to have to remark constantly, so what kind of pencil/marker do you all use on a top stitch line that is both visible yet easily washes off after you are done!?!

YouTube, Young Guns upholstery, they have a video showing different styles of pleats. In 1, he mentions the pencil he's using. I may have it downloaded or bookmarked give me a minute or 2.

EDIT: He's using a white upholstery grease pencil from the fabric/sewing supply store, that looks the same size as a reg #2 pencil. He sharpened it to a tapered wedge shape. Then uses it once along 1 side of the wedge & rotates it 180degrees & uses it along the other side. Not exactly, but almost like resharpening the pencil every time he marks a pleat. Pencil & sharpening tip @ min 3:20

There's also a link to his written description of the pleat measuring & marking steps:

thanks JB...thats what I tried, used a white, blue, yellow one...none would mark the brown dark enough to see for long and would rub off almost instantly....dunno...is my first attempt with pleats and never hard to mark like this...if I remark every couple it works, but just looking for a faster way without having to stop every couple to remark...

Hmmm... Is it particularly warm or humid where your working? His sample mockup isn't very big, but it didn't look like there was any problem w/ grease rubbing off. Does the Rocketeer or walking foot have an adjustable seam gauge that would let you mark 2 or 3, then use them as a line to follow w/ the seaming guage. I'm not even positive that's what its called. It looks like the arm on the front of a freeway lane marking truck rig. W/ a small needle pointer that you use for reference running along the previous pleat..

Remarking often sounds like a good way to mis-mark 1. Not so great..... Bummer..

Does a sharpie mark stay? Or rub off too? If it will stay, Mark inside the allowance 1/2" on top & bottom where you won't need to worry about the permanent mark showing. Run the pleat line for 2, 3, 4 whatever you can get w/out any rub off. Then mark a few more & repeat until your done. Slower but less room for mis-marking....

Hope some of that ^^^ helps.

I can't find the vid, but I saw a guy use plain ole' masking tape offset a bit so he could use the presser foot to guide along the edge of the tape

Ok, took a while to get my machine dialed in for the task, and this piece wont actually be used because there were a few mistakes while I got it worked out, but here is the pleated brown

yes I give myself more work by suggesting this look to the customer, but like I told him, I am looking to make a name for myself and when his boat seats "POP" and people ask him where he got it done...I might get more business lol

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

yeah I am using 1/2 foam with the backing, Can tell you that I have told my wife I need a new machine and she said I could get one if it is less than 500 bucks...so keep an eye out for me! I cussed a lot during this because one mistake ruins everything you did up to that point.

I also do not like the foot control on my machine, getting a speed I like is touchy... guessing your supposed to roll your heel to activate switch, which I cant do right so I take off my shoe and use my big toe to push it...hard to hold at one slow speed and if I push too fast I get short stitches

IMG_4279.jpg

going to call my sewing guy and see if he can put a more modern control on it as well

Take the switch apart and put some cardboard under the button to restrict the amount you can push it in. If you play with it you'll get where you can push hard and it will still only run the speed you want. That's what I did on mine.

sounds like a solid plan...will see what I can do with that! I am in no hurry, slow stitches just come out better!

so here is my first pleated panel....looks better stretched out, but on the bed it is a little wavy

I tried to video while I was doing this...dunno how you guys work the camera and the tools at the same time but was too much hassle!
