I am amazed! That little "project" Skeeter has turned you into an upholstery craftsman (among other things!) I really like the sketches as well, that looks very "automobilly" (I know it's not a word) kinda like an old school upholstery job. I almost cannot wait to redo mine!

Keep on keepin' on!

Congrats!

Keep this up & we'll have to call you the oops jr of upholstery! Too many sewing gigs to even think about working on your own boat:D Occasionally a good problem to have. Just not for too long! The Skeeter might get jealous:p

Pleats look great!

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

I draw my pleat lines on the back of the foam scrim and sew it upside down. This way I do not need to worry about cleaning it off the vynil, I use a regular #2 pencil to mark out my vynil pieces. I also find it easier to make large enough pieces to make numerous seats and then i cut the paterned piece last. This way if your pleats shrink your seat it does not matter because you have not patterned it yet. It is essentially like using heat embossed pleated material. I have found I make less mistakes and save time.

thanks Kmarine...funny you should say that you sew it upside down...that is in fact the solution I found as well...worked a lot better, fed through the machine easier...I had to take a little time dialing in the machine so that my bottom stitch was as perfect as my top stitch, but it worked out

I did add the cardboard and it does keep it at a slower overall speed, but still do not like the trigger on this control and think I will spend a few bucks and get a new foot control with the pedal action I was used to before, they only cost like 30 bucks and seem easy enough to rewire

I recomend an electronic type. less heat buildup and more pedal control. Usiually $15 to$25 See if you can find one already wired for your machine type. It is unfortunate your machine does not have an external motor. Otherwise you could change pully sizes to slow down your machine.

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

yeah, my machine is sub par for the job really...it is a nice machine, but I am in the market for an industrial walking foot since it appears to be a very viable business venture...I have not been looking for work long and have 3 jobs (current one, the race trailer, and a 22' ski boat) and one possible that my wife's friend wants done...already feeling overwhelmed lol, and a new machine would definitely make things easier and that much more professional. It is amazing how quickly one little thing can change goals in life. was talking to the guy that owns the marina and he said we haven't had a good upholstery guy around here for a while and when the season is over I should expect even more work

epoxied the insides of the frames...this stuff has to be done prior to covering it with the finishing wood, inside will be hollow but look solid when I am done

I don't like this part, can't stop and take a break until it is all done because it has a limited working life

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

got a second coat of epoxy on the insides and installed my kick boards today, have the seat bases cut, but cant put them in until i get the 1X2s ran along the lips I left in the supports. I did everything else out of 3/8" ply for lighter weight but kick boards and seat bases are 3/4" for strength
