Ayuh,...

You probably should coat 1 paint product with a product from the Same Company....
You'll get alot less Surprises that way...

Adding hardener to standard Rustolium creates a Shinier surface,...
And,.. Rustolium also has Clear products...

i would stay with the same products a lot of them will not work with each other with rustoleum it is even worse rustoleum has fish oil in there product that is what helps the product when they say it is rust proof. when they would put rustoleum on some rust on a car auto paint would fall off will not stick to oil

i dont think rustoleum has a clear coat that isnt aerosol.
I want to add some flake to it so im trying to figure out an inexpensive way.

Go with a single stage automotive paint. That will go over Por 15..... just go to a auto paint dealer and ask.

well i talked to a company who sells flake and they said they wouldnt recommend it because the paint will cover most of the flake. There flake was only supposed to be added to clear. i might buy some and add it to the rustoleum to just try it.

As long as you keep it stirred up as you spray it. You have to shoot flake hard enough where it lays flat.... it is a fun job!

Mettalic paint and "flake" are two totally different additives. Flake should only be applied with clear and then top coated with pure clear (usually many coats).

Mettalic is comprised of very tiny particles and can be mixed with most single stage paints with good success.

I always sprayed a couple coats of base color and then one coat of mettalic. Some guys spray it all with the mettalic.

Flake requires several base coats, the flake (however many coats you can stand) and then several coats of clear. Then once fully cured it should be rubbed out to get a super flat finish. Flakes don't lay flat....

I painted a few bikes back in the 70s when flake was all the rage... now I just think it's fugly... funny how you change with age!

Why do you want to try for a high(er) end paint job and go cheap on the paint? The work and prep are all the same, you're just cheating yourself by using a paint that will perform at the low end of the scale when compared what's available. I'm not saying Rustolium is terrible paint, but with all the work involved it may pay to go with a better product.

ive done plenty of custom paint jobs. using high end, and using low end paint.

At this point in my boats life (1975) it doesnt need 500 dollars worth of paint. Prep doesnt bother me. Im used to it. I can get a pretty decent paint job done for 100 bucks.

Re: Por 15 with Rustoleum?

The reason I think its odd is because you asked about the least expensive base coat with a supposedly very good and pricy top coat. If the base coat fails for any reason you just wasted ?all? of the time and money you spent on this project, and it will most likely fail before the clear would even if it is compatible. There?s nothing wrong with low cost if that?s the objective, but it might pay to stay with a line of products designed to work together.

i should have clarified. its going to be two tone. with a small stripe (that would be cleared)

ill probably just say screw it and do it in a regular color
