Thats how I taught my wife to learn her left from her right.... (I wish I was kidding).
Doesn't matter, the port and starboard sides of the vessel don't change just because YOU don't know which way to face!!! It's like the idiots who think the back end of the prop is the front just because that's the bit closest to them when they stand behind the boat!!!
Port is port (but used to be larboard) and starboard is starboard.... Do you have a special way so you don't forget which one is salt and which one is pepper? or which way to move the little stick on the steering column to indicate which way you're going to turn?

The salt and pepper thing, one taste salty and one spicy. Who came up with those stupid terms anyway? why couldn't they just called left side, right side?
I never paid attention to either. I just point to the side I'm referring to. Besides, people on my boat get confused with the term 'helm' so I don't bother with these terms. I think bow is the only one I don't get weird looks from.
Now I'll simply remember that if I'm on the starboard side, the other side must be port, but I'll keep that to myself to prevent the strange looks
