Thats how I taught my wife to learn her left from her right.... (I wish I was kidding). ;)

I had to teach my wife, "Wedding band hand, Dear, wedding band hand!" :(

Yeah but what if you're standing at the bow facing the stern? Your right become left and left become right.

Doesn't matter, the port and starboard sides of the vessel don't change just because YOU don't know which way to face!!! It's like the idiots who think the back end of the prop is the front just because that's the bit closest to them when they stand behind the boat!!!

Port is port (but used to be larboard) and starboard is starboard.... Do you have a special way so you don't forget which one is salt and which one is pepper? or which way to move the little stick on the steering column to indicate which way you're going to turn?

Well really????? the sides don't change? I never knew that. The salt and pepper thing, one taste salty and one spicy. Who came up with those stupid terms anyway? why couldn't they just called left side, right side?

BTW, Port side is called Port because that is the side of the boat that was always facing the "port" when loading/unloading.

I never paid attention to either. I just point to the side I'm referring to. Besides, people on my boat get confused with the term 'helm' so I don't bother with these terms. I think bow is the only one I don't get weird looks from.

Now I'll simply remember that if I'm on the starboard side, the other side must be port, but I'll keep that to myself to prevent the strange looks :D:D:D:D:eek:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Hey, I was in the nukie navy, Shellback EM1. The boat had floors, ceilings, a pointy end, a blunt end, a dock-side, a sui-side, a dry-side, a wet-side, and steps.:D Our way to cope and drive the Bos'ns nuts.

My wife came up with... the captain is the "star" of the ship and he always sits on the starboard side. (driving)

She was in a good mood that day.

cant you pull in on either side of a dock and load and unload?

what about in England where they drive on the wrong side of the street? is port and starboard backwards?

and since we had the steering wheel on the left, wht not the helm? used to be in the stern or on the bridge, both oon the center of a ship

I am right handed, so when I learned, I always remembered that the bigger word and the bigger arm were on the same side.

Worked for me, and my wife could remember it the same way.

Had a first-class boatswain's mate at boot camp who would pick out a recruit at random and ask him which direction was port and which was starboard. A wrong answer resulted in 50 push-ups. Didn't take long for the entire company to learn and remember.
