what about in England where they drive on the wrong side of the street? is port and starboard backwards?

I know this one;

Back in the day when knights rode horses (do they still?), they mounted their horse from the left side, and as most were right-handed, they would fight/joust/etc., on the right. So they sort of drove from the right side of the horse. It stuck. As an added bonus, if you're driving in England, you can joust with on-coming traffic! :D:D:D My wife is from England, and she looked it up.

So why do the yanks and frogs drive on the wrong (right) side?

I grew up on a sailboat, so I've never had a problem with port and starboard, along with a plethora of other nautical nomenclature.
It's right and left I have a problem with.

I was taught it with this (almost) joke.

A sailor walks into a busy bar and asks the bartender for a beer.
The bartender replies,
"sorry mate, it's been a very busy night, we only have RED PORT LEFT"

that's the way my RYA instructor showed me to remember it :)

Lets see, hot wire is on the left and electrons flow down hill. Wish port and starboard were the only thing I forgot anymore.
