possible reed problem

Hey all; Have 2000 90 hp merc. 2-stroke. Carbs rebuilt 6 months ago , boat has been running fine. Other day smelled gas under motor cover and saw gas leaking out the front of lower carb, even with motor off. Took carb off and apart, nothing appeared out of the ordinary. Did a bench test to check the float operation by filling carb with gas and blowing as hard as i could thru the gas line hose, it held it's own . I assume float is ok. Put back on and gas still flowed out lower carb. Not so much at high idle, but at idle and continues after shut down. Is it a bad reed valve ? Thanks for any input

Re: possible reed problem

Very unlikely that is a reed valve problem. It is likely an inlet needle vavle and seat problem, a float problem or some combo.

Check the condition of the needle valve and if there is any buildup of junk on the seat. If the valve is rubber the tip could have become worn or hardend which leaks. Double check the float height. Somewhere in there you should find the problem.

Thanks Chris. I read where reed valves are mostly trouble free. But the carb is now on the bench with the bowl full of gas, no leaking out front or anywhere. Stupid question. Can a carb from above the bottom carb be leaking down since the gas lines all connect to each other causing the bottom one to leak out the front? The 90 has three carbs up and down. Thanks

I would not use mouth blowing. Better to use primer bulb to put fuel pressure on the carbs. You can even hook the gas line directly to each carb while you hold it in your hand and have somebody pump the bulb. You can fill each carb that way and drain them to find out how much gas is being let in. Maybe you have a leaking gasket in the carb?

Re: possible reed problem

OK. Thanks to the Pros who answered in regards to my problem. After taking carb off a couple of times , visuall inspection appeared nothing out of the ordinary, float seemed to operate properly during bench test. But still leaked out front when put back on. Back off again i decided to blow compressed air thru everything as last resort. Float level measured fine . 9/16 " by the book. Back on everything is fine , no leaking. My new question now is what was it. Carbs rebuilt 6 months ago, new inline filter ,new water seperator, stabill added to gas, boat being used. If there was junk somewhere, why just bottom carb trouble? Crap flows downhill !!!?? Appreciate past and future opinions Thanks again.
