The motor is sitting on a 1975 CrestLiner 15' fiberglass boat, not in the best shape...

Do you think i will get more or less selling the motor off the boat?

On the boat, so people can test drive the motor.
You might get close to $2000

wait till spring for 2 reasons:

1. its not as cold, weather is getting better and people wanna be out and about

2. tex refund checks are just getting in and burning holes in joe everybody's pocket

You can check the NADA book value by clicking a button on the boattrader.com website. It'll give you the average retail price.

If you want to get top dollar, then follow this simple strategy:

1) Wash, polish and wax motor. Clean everything and put fresh coat of cheap silver spray paint on prop.

2) Take photos of motor from most flattering angle. Be sure to exclude any areas of damage or corrosion from your photos.

3) Create E-bay ad with photos. Be sure that the description of o/b praises its long history of trouble free performance. Use phrases like "runs like a dream", "many pleasant memories boating with kids", "is my favorite o/b", "this o/b allowed me to catch trophy fish..." etc.

Avoid direct statements about its actual condition. Always claim that it looks great (for a motor of its age) and runs great. You don't know anything about o/b's, but your friend does and he says it's are real steal. You love to trust people, but your wife insists it be sold strictly as is, no refunds and full payment before pickup.

4) Sit back and watch the bidding war.

I sold a 2HP Suzuki on eBay that had a broken off tiller handle (not easy to fix without taking whole engine apart). Apart from the fact you couldn't steer it :), it ran OK. I managed to provoke a bidding war on eBay and got twice what I thought it was worth. No I didn't try to hide anything. Auction fever can be a powerful force....

This sounds like a good idea, and it excellent advice, but should i wait till spring on ebay or just do it, considering someone in FL or CA will most likely buy it..

Ummmm.....

Mnemonic, my post wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I described a rather underhanded way of placing an ad.

Mark.

Well, you described the motor...except for the damaged parts part of it... It really is in excellent condition now.

Last year, I sold a '03 Merc 50 hp 2 stroke. I got $2,750 for it. It was almost new. I'd guess one of the previous posters was pretty close on yours...$1,500?

Good luck!

Re: Possible selling my motor...

With regard to eBay - as a buyer these are the kinds of items you can do well on - high priced items with a limited market - particularly if they are not featured or are otherwise setup to attract a crowd (no reserve for example).

As a seller you may want to feature it (doesn't cost much) or otherwise make sure it attracts attention.

The question of a reserve has two sides - while it can keep you from being screwed, it can also kill "auction fever".

Re: Possible selling my motor...

I am also going to put my 1987 Suzuki DT85 up for sale, possibly on Ebay. I was wondering about the shipping costs and how to pack and "pallet" an outboard. How hard is it to pack and ship a large outboard? Since mine is an older outboard and not worth as much as some newer motors should I just tell people they have to pick it up themselves? Where does one go to ship a large item, I'm guessing not UPS.
