I have a 1994 Evinrude 80 jet
(115hp),Model#E115JKLERS with a bad cylinder. With the advise of members of this board ( Smart people),I bought a 1983 115hp(prop motor)mod#E115TLCTE that runs great. The idea is to swap the powerheads.I have a dilema however. The jet has a tuned exhaust cover (bubble back)and the earlier motor does'nt(flat back). It was suggested that I put the tuned cover on the early powerhead,(to make more hp.) which makes sense, but should I swap carbs also to maintain the proper mixture, or will it make a difference ??
Thanks for the help
Bill

Re: Power head swap

About the only time that makes a difference is when the motor is over 6000 rpm. Your jet probably isn't so it may not make a lot of difference. You can swap the exhaust covers easily. Dont even bother with the deflectors inside, leave them out.

Even if you don't swap the exhaust you can swap the carbs just to see for yourself what happens but, again, on a jet it probably wont make a lot of difference. If one set of carbs is bigger it'll obviously burn a bit more fuel.

Oh, one more thing to look at -- the 94 has the driveshaft O ring in the crank. The 83 has it on the driveshaft. If you don't swap cranks you'll have no driveshaft O ring. No biggie, just pull the lower and grease the splines each year with a good waterproof grease.
