Re: Powerhead Difference

Shuckbo
I am not certain if the 97 will mount up because it is a different block from the 225. I am certain that a pre 1994 lower unit has a longer drive shaft by about 1/4" than the 1997 requires (trust me, not a good thing for the bearings from experience). Also the 97 has a system check that won't be utilized with 89 controls, but I believe there is an adaptor available from BRP for pre/post 1996 setups. I believe the 89 is a 90° big block motor and the 97 is a 60° small block and not compatable, but this is only from memory and I'm not 100% certain.
Good luck

Good memory Angus63! Yes the 225 is a 90* block while the 175 is a 60*. They are completely different.

The lower units can be interchanged but each of those powerheads will not fit on the other's midsection. None of the components (fuel system, ignition, hood, pans etc) will interchsnge either.

Oops!! The fuel primer is the same. That will swap.

Re: Powerhead Difference

Hi thanks for the replies, well this guy has the complete engine minus the gearbox so it looks as if the best thing to do is just to take the gearbox off my engine and fit it to the ocean pro , but the only thing is that his engine is a long shaft and mine is extra long , now not a problem because I have a jackplate so I can adjust the height difference and the boat I have anyway was designed to take a long shaft engine , I think the main problem here is that my shalf on my gearbox will be too long , would it be possible to have a good machine shop shorten the shaft for me , I could go and buy a new shaft but I dont want to be spending a lot off money on this project , so can someone advise me what is the best way forward , many thanks Steve

Re: Powerhead Difference

I would not recomend cutting and welding the drive shaft. Those drive shafts are made of specilized steel.

They have a carbon content that does not lend its self well to welding, without specilized heat treating after welding. called (annealing). By the time you have all this done you will have spent enough to by new.

They are heat treated at the factory for flexabalitly and tuffness, But when welded they will become brittle due to carbon content. They will work for awhile, but sadly not for long.

I beleive your best bet is to buy new or good used proper length shaft.

Good Luck!

Re: Powerhead Difference

After re reading your post I see your only talking shortening the shaft by 1/4 inch.

It could be that a machine shop could shortin it by that amount, By just grindin end of shaft down on the splined end and re chamfering on a lathe. Witout doing any heating or welding.

That shaft length is critical as all getout. If to long it will take the thrust bearings out in no time. Better a little short than to long.

Manual says even to much grease on end of splined shaft will cause bearing failure.

Good luck!

Re: Powerhead Difference

hi , Thanks for the replies again , heres what i think would be the best option myself buy the 175hp long shalf that i have been offered , remove my good gearbox off my 225hp XL shalf with the blown powerhead ,the only thing that i think that i can have it machined to a long shalf and have new splines machined , well i do really thank anyone for their input to this as i live in Ireland , getting any advice from the Johnson dealer over here is impossible , anytime you speak to him alll he wants to do is sell you a new engine I personally get the impression that he does not know one end off an engine from the other and if you do need a part he wants you to tell him the part number you need , then wait 6 months for him to get it for you , most times it has just been easier in the past to phone a dealer in the states and have them post me the parts and in most cases they arrive airmail within a week, well if i have to buy a new shalf were is the best place to get the proper one and how much do the normally cost, many thanks steve
