i did a pressure check on lower half of my mc1 and found that air was leaking at shiftshaft bushing, not a big deal. then tested upper, leaks down fast but cant find any bubbles when spraying with soapy water. where are the upper units likely to leak at? thanks ken

Re: pressure testing outdrives

There are only a couple of places it can leak. The seals where the vertical shaft from the lower goes into the gear, and the input shaft (ujoints shaft)
The cap oring could also leak.
Do you have the upper off the boat?

Ayuh,....

Put the 1/2s back together....
The seal in the upper can't seal against the vertical shaft, if it isn't there....

Re: pressure testing outdrives

When re-sealing a drive, is it necessary to pull the whole drive apart and re seal even the bearing seals? or is it just a few critical locations that must be addressed (and where might they be on a Volvo sx drive?)

Also, sorry about post hijack, but I have a customers pinion bearing housing that siezed in the pivot housing actually severing the pinion bearing housing at the 4 bolt holes upon drive removal.

Can I rebuild the pinion bearing housing using the old input gear shaft? Should I use what I can from the old set-up or build new from scratch? If i do rebuild from scratch can I at least re-use the input gear to avoid having to change the other corresponding gears?

and I have to do this x2 on a neglected salt water chris craft with Volvo SX drives.

Come on guys, this is Ken's question, about his problem. if you have questions about your drive then start a new thread. There is no way either reply #5 or 6 should be here.

soap bubbles aren't always the best route cause sometimes the leak can just blow the soap away and not make a bubble if it's a bad one, try submerging the drive in a tub of water then see what developes. I'm baseing this on years of experience with soap bubbles on refrigeration equipment, they don't always show.
