Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

I doubt that Penzoil sells to Mercury, I used to run Mercury oil (until my 1989 200 hp Merc blew up) and it smelled like amonia, definately don't get that from the Penzoil Superblend (whuch I have ran the past 4-5 yrs). Early on (after a new powerhead) I ran a 50 gal barrel of Exxon TCW through my engine and it still runs great. I think as long as it is rated TCW3 and certified, use it. WallyWorld also sells PCW-2stroke oil.

Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

Lets go back a step guys. A TCW-3 formula oil must meet the same stipulations and quality controls wherever is produced, and whatever label it is sold under. This will happen at an oil refinery. The product will then be sold in various quantities to various packagers, all making different claims about their own product.<br />TCW-3 is TCW-3 and nothing else. It doesn't matter if it says kwik-e-mart or Rolls Royce on the label.<br />Slightly off topic - but similar idea - I have a friend who worked in a meat processing plant. The same meat from the same beast was packaged under four or five different names for different supermarkets / brands. One could sell for twice the price of the next, and be identical. The same thing goes for oil.<br />Look at the major oil corporations - shell/esso-exxon/bp are largely the same outfit. Do you honestly think each will produce their fuels seperately at different plants to a different spec?<br />And think yourselves lucky on prices - Shell and Quicksilver TCW-3 are both around £24 per 4l in the UK. At $1.66 per £ exchange rate, that's $40 to you guys!<br />Petrol is currently £0.90 per litre ($1.50) or around $6.80 per gallon here.

Im sorry, but your information as simply untrue, Wouldnt it be nice if it were though!<br /><br />If you think that oil manufactures and bottlers just switch bottles as they are filling them, you have another thing coming.<br /><br />Virgin samples of say a 5W-30 car oil, lets say Valvoline for example will show a certain additive package. If you take another virgin sample of an oil bottled by Warren Labs (Valvoline), for another label, (Say NAPA), it will not show the same add pack, be it a synthetic or a regular oil. API Labeled, yes, but not exactly the same.<br /><br />TC-W3 oils fit into this as well. If you think that Shell, (Which is Walmarts TC-W3 oil supplier at the momment, Blends the oil for Walmart the same as There TC-W3 Shell branded oil, you would be sadly mistaken. TC-W3 YES, But just. Dont get me wrong, Im not saying that it will blow your engine up, but you can do better by spending just a bit more.

LubeDude is correct. Several years back, Bass and Walleye Boats magazine did a story on TC-W3 oils to see if they were all the same or not. Their lab tests proved that each of the oils tested had a completely different formula. TC-W3 NMMA certification does not allow the oils to have the same formula, each one has to be different.

I suspect gas is the same, but,I remember around 1974 when I was in Abdereen, S.D. and a friend took me down to thegas lines that supplied all the different stations for many miles around, there were only 3 hook-ups, depending on grade, the rest was the magic that the driver would dump in his tanker before he filled it up for delivery to the stations on his route. Can they really add enough additive to really make that much difference to the gas or the OIL? Just to stir the pot a little more@@@@@@@@@@@@

Its really easy to get all worked up about oils. <br /><br />  Really, ya think?   <br /><br /> I dont know of an oil I wouldnt use, or that I would tell people not to use. It really is just a dab of this and a dab of that in whatever base stock. Now there are oils that I wouldnt use in certain applications. ;) <br /><br />To Quote TheOilDoc, "It dosnt really matter whats in it, its how it performs that counts"! Or something like that.

Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

Just found a local store that has started carrying a line of Citgo marine products. They carry both outboard and pwc oil, as well as grease for marine use and lower end lube. Outboard oil is $11.50 a gallon. I figure this is a good brand name. I think I will try it in my small boat for a season. If it is good may try it in the new big Mercury later.

I really don't think you will be able to tell if a oil is "good" or not. All you will be able to establish is that it works!...and why shouldn't it?<br /> <br />I have an old 3 1/2 hp Westbend. (No idea of the year...probably 1960's). This motor has been used extensively with who knows what brand of two stroke oil over it's lifetime as it's had several owners ...and it still pushes a boat along nicely. <br /><br />I think it's all hockey puck BS what brand you use, as long as it is the correct type of two stroke oil specified for your type of engine, has the TCW3 certification, and is mixed to the correct ratio.

Seahorse,<br /><br />"Their lab tests proved that each of the oils tested had a completely different formula. TC-W3 NMMA certification does not allow the oils to have the same formula, each one has to be different." <br /><br />Interesting comment about the fact that they "have to be different". Do you have more information as to the reasoning behind that requirement? Seems odd that difference is a mandate.<br /><br />Just curious,<br /><br />Mark

When we talk about Wallmart oil, we are referring to the SuperTech wallmart brand, it's in a bluegrey bottle, (Shell), or sometimes a white one which is stamped Warren on the bottom. (Valvoline).

All companies cerifying oil with the NMMA have access to the testing results of the others. It is all on a non-disclosure agreement and they can also see how their lube compares with the others on the market. <br /><br />If the regulations were not in place, what would keep someone from trying to certify a "crappy" oil then see the formulas from the others and copy them as their own?<br /><br />The NMMA also keeps the formulas on file and they test samples from retailer shelves and the bottlers and have them analyzed to make sure they have not been changed.<br /><br />visit nmma.org, look around, read, ask questions

Hi guys,<br />I bought this TC-W3 rated oil from Walmart couple of months ago when I saw them there, I believe it was like $6.59 -defnitely under 7 bucks-, and as you can see here: it's in the blue plastic container with green label, under "Super Tech" brand... :) <br /><br />

Lubedude.......hear what you say and yes there are some blue containers mixed in. Grin. <br /><br />I do use their house brand 15w-40 hd oil in my diesel tractors and can't tell it from Rotella T, or the other name brands; stays clean about as long and oil pressure stays up.<br /><br />Mark

You may be being decieved here, oil color and preasure isnt the best way to judge an oil. I have seen actual results with Used oil Analysis and actually the SuperTech diesel oils dont hold up as far as wear metals and holding in grade anywhere near as good as the Dello 400 and Rotella does. Seems that there car oils are not a bad deal, but I wouldnt recommend there diesel oils.

Ghost rider - I believe there is two grades of Merc oil - Premium and Premium plus I just saw Premium at Sam's club here locally for, I think, $12 per gallon. If you want to stick with Quicksilver check that out. I don't believe anyone would say that that oil is not good for your Merc. You might try a tank of the Premium and a tank of the premium plus (or another top line - meaning not cheapest - oil) and see if you can tell any performance, smoke or starting difference. If there is a difference, you might decide the price is worth it.

LubeDude, Yes on the blue house container. ST was kind enough to show us a picture of it......but the yellow Penny is there too.<br /><br /><br />D. Agree on the 2 Merc oils. I still think the plus is a syn blend but they don't mention it; as stated however, Penny does.
