Before I made the maden voyage I had a hard time starting My 1990 Force 150. I had to manually prime the cylinders before it would start. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks Bill Mc

Re: Priming

The first thing I would do is remove and replace the fuel pump diaphragm.Second I would diassemble, soak and rebuild carb(s). Third I would just for the hell of it change all the fuel and vacuum hoses. I'd guess about 5-6 hours of work plus parts($30-$40 at NAPA assuming you do this yourself).

Mac - Attack

As you said since this was your maiden voyage, I assume this was the first time you tried starting it or at least you're new to it. Did you pump up the primer bulb first and then choke it by pushing in on the key switch while trying to start it? Did you raise the fast idle lever a bit? Make sure the choke/primer system is working properly. Does it run good once it's started?

Re: Priming

First time was on muffs, didn't know about the choke switch so we primed it manualy -a little gas in each cylinder. Second time was in a large tank, used the electric choke and it started right up. Primer bulb does not get real hard but the bowls are filled with gas - used this gas to manually prime. Ran real smooth after finally getting it going. After it was warmed up and turning it off the motor started right away on the restart. Bill Mc
I did raise the fast idle up just a bit on the cold start.

Re: Priming

Those motors are pretty cold blooded and require a bit more to get them to run at start-up. You may have to "Bump" the primer in a few times to keep it running until it smooths out enough to run on it's own. So does it start OK now that you are using the key switch to prime it? Does it stay running? Hard to tell from your post if the problem is solved..

Re: Priming

The boat was in the driveway when we tested her in a tank of water. This was the second time trying to start her and I used the switch to prime her. She started right up. The third time was last Sunday at a small inland lake. I used the switch this time too but she would not start until we manually primed her. Once she started she stayed running and was easy to start afterwards while she was still warm. Bill Mc

Re: Priming

I do not know if you have an (A) electronic choke or a (B) fuel enriching priming valve. In either case, you could have someone push in the key while you check things out. A -- do the choke plates move well? B -- with the hose pulled off at the outlet, does the valve squirt gas? Of course, pushing the key in for more than 3 seconds or so will flood the motor before you can say Noah -- based on my own experience.

Re: Priming

You mentioned in your thread that the priming bulb never gets hard. If you keep pumping do you have gas coming out the carbs? I would try and find out why this is happening. Try replacing all fuel line hosing and clamps. Maybe put new bulb on. If these dont work start rebuilding fuel pump and carbs till you are able to get the bulb hard.
