Hi to all and to this perfect forum

I have a problem with my about 10 years old JOHNSON 40HP.
My outboard has 2 tanks oil and gasoline ( oil injection )
I fish at summer, and the motor stays with no use 3, 5 months.
This is the problem I have, When I try to start the engine after this period, It won't start, I try a lot of time pressing the primer ( Primer works ok the coil is ok the cables and if I don't press it for 5-6 seconds the engine doen't start at all ) it starts a little and after 5 second it goes off.
This happens a lot of times until the battery runs out.
The only solution I have found, but it is a very difficult task, in this motor, is to open the screw on the carberators and empty it.( small tank in the carberator )
It has only oil not gasoline ( because in 5 months the gasoline had evaporated )
When I empty the carberators, the engine starts AT ONCE.
and I have no problem when I use the engine OFTEN. It runs very good.
I was thinking when is the time to stop the engine ( for winter ) to disconnect the gasoline plug and run it until it stops, but in this case the oil is running in the engine and I have the same problems ( separated tank )
Is it possible to put a valve on the oil line and shut off and the oil ? or I will have probelm with the oil pump?
When I disconnect the casoline line the engine runs at about 3 minutes
I hope you understand my English ( I am from Greece )

Thank you in advance

Don't run the engine out of gasoline by disconnecting the fuel line, Leonidas. Oil continues to pump into the carburetors. You have already discovered the result of that.

If you are going to store the engine for a long time, drain both carbs after you shut it off.

Good luck. :)

Hi my friend and thank you for the answer
Draining the carberators is not very easy, I have to take of a lot of screws in the engine I have. 40HP 10 years Johnson
In front of the draining screws is a black big part ( I think air for the carbs ) I have to take out about 12 screws
Is there another way?
Putting a vane (valve ) when I disconnect the gasoline line to shut off and the oil line?
Is this will damage the oil pump?
The time before the enfine runs out of fuel is about 3-4 minutes.
There must be another way....

Thanks again.

Hmmmmm. Seems reasonable that if you can shut off the gas and the oil at the same time you would avoid the carbs full of oil part, but with multi-carb engines there is still a risk of running one cylinder without lubrication while the other carb runs dry.

It might be a safer solution to just load up your gas with Stabil and run some of it through the engine before shutting down for storage.

it is a stabilizer for fuel, has keep if from varnishing up. multicarbed motors should not be run dry. after shutting down you can remove the drain plugs, on the carb, and drain what gas is in the bowl.
