I have a 165 HP inline 6 I/O that starts just fine but when you go to engage the outdrive the motor dies. I have been told that i need to move a cable closer for the drive but before i do that i want to know if there are any other ideas that anyone has.

Re: Problems engaging the drive

the shift interupt swith is just under the arms that your throttle and shift cabbles attach to at the engine. its got a couple of black wires on it. mine was on the left side of the engine just above the heat exchanger, your may be different

I had this issue a few years back.. it ended up being some cable addjustment issues. if your cables feel smooth and you dont have to apply too much pressure on them then i would think the cables are ok...if its a bit of stiffness and not smooth then you may have a cable hanging up causing too much tension and therfore breaking the switch

if in your case you had no issues and it just started the i would take the dog house off and while you have your buddy put it in and out of gear..watch what the plate does.. you can do this with the engine off.. its just to see if your switch is engaging before the shifting actually happens. i wish i had a pictuer to show you, its really easy to tell.

oh forgot to ask... for those of you that have replaced this switch... how hard is it to do??? is it as easy as taking the old out and putting the new in?? or is there more to it than that??

Re: Problems engaging the drive

Got it fixed.... turns out it wasnt the switch but it was the lower shift cable assembly... and the only problem was the guy who had it measured the cable attachments wrong.... they were supposed to be 6 inches and he had them at about 7 1/2 inches... easy fix...:D
