I know you cant make ice cream out of sh@# but i dont think im trying to do that this time. I cant keep the 1948 9.8 johnson sea horse running in the barrel. I disassembled the engine and cleaned it out the best i could and inspected every port to make sure it wasnt plugged. I replaced bolts and cleaned out 50+ yrs of carbon build up. I thought for sure it would run this time to no avale. It will run fine on the bench but the minute i put it in the barrel it shut down. I also noticed when it was apart that the block wasnt getting any water which the prop is responcible for delivering. I blew out all the lines and was getting air flow in return so I know the system isnt blocked. Any quesses on the problem of lack of water and zero performance in the barrel would help. I tried to mess with the idle pins on the carberator and it did not help.

There's only two differences I can think of between the bench and the tank.

1. Temperature. Unlikely to kill the motor.

2. Electrical. Something is shorting when you put it in the tank. If it's instant in the tank but no problem outside it's most likely electrical.

Electrical is a lot more likely. Check and trace every wire for ground.

If the block isn't getting water that's a cooling issue which will cause problems only after it's reached operating temp, or higher.

The only other thing I can think of is that that there's some switch that that senses water flow and there's not enough water flow (maybe becuase the impeller is stuffed if it has one) to keep th4e switch closed.

its not immediate so i dont think its electrical and if i tip the motor up out of the water so the prop isnt all the way in itll run like on the bench but when i put it verticle again itll stall

It is Definately with out a doubt fuel level. Most likely the varnish on the cork float has lost its sealing. Other only cause is you are a little off on the float level. Fix one or both. Get a carb rebuilding kit to get the float gauge. Set the float first. If it still conks the same way, it means a float job and a float reset. If you have to reseal the float, use a cleaner that removes the fuel oil completly. Let it dry for a week at 70 degrees or higher. I did a lot in the winter and set my ELECTRIC ONLY oven to 200 F maximum. Let the oven reach temp. So you don't over heat the varnish and make a mess. The purpose of the heat is to drive out any fuel in the float, there is some danger in this method, so use a lot of sense. NOT SURE, DO NOT do the oven job. AIR DRY it. Light coat of varnish is tricky because cork can have so many deep grooves. That is were the floats soak up the fuel and cause lower and lower levels.--------------------------Stop running it on the bench. You have probably wiped out the rubber pump impellor. You may also start warping the head and block surface. Run it only in the tank. It should out live us. :)
