Hi,i own a 1994 ,200 hp v6 oceanpro evinrude outboard, has aprox 550hrs up .Among some of the problems i am experiencing are continual replacement of the stator,up to the 4th one now since 1994.Also it is currently bieng rebuilt as number 2 cylinder and piston is badly scored as was the case previously when it was about 250hrs old, some of the other pistons ,numbers 1 and 5 ,i think ,also show slight deteriation on the exhaust side. The mechanic is not sure what the problem is ,suggests maybe running to lean ,or has been getting to hot.or possibly under to much load ,but discounted this as it will peak at 6000 revs. it is on a 23 ft half cab monohull.
He is considering resleaving number 2 and replacing only the bad pistons. Crank is fine as are most of bearings .Any suggestions please.

Re: problems with 200 hp evinrude

Those cylinders suggest a cooling issue. But it could be combustion temps also. Make sure the carbs are clean and you are running the correct grade FRESH!!! fuel. Here it is 87 octane. Higher octane burns hotter. Make sure you are using Champion plugs. Make sure you are not over propped and "lugging" the motor. That will increase combustion temps also. Make sure the center hub magnet on the flywheel is in the correct position and not moving.

The original OMC thermostats had issues that are hard to explain here. We have had great success using the Aqua Power 403, if you can find them. Once you see the basic construction you will se what we mean.

Post answers and more info and we can go from there.

Good luck!

Re: problems with 200 hp evinrude

Dhadley,Thanks for the tips ,I always try to use fresh fuel,i think our octane would be similar, what is difference between champion plugs and others. What do you mean re overpropped and lugging, and more info please re center hub magnet on flywheel in correct position.
I noticed that one of the magnets has come adrift after it was pulled down.Could this be due to the difficulty in removing the flywheel as some previous mechanic used locktite on the keyway.(probably unnecesarily),and they had major difficulty removing it.Is it ok to reglue this magnet back on .
Also where could i find these Aqua power 403,and are you suggesting the original thermo's are not triggering of when they should.
Thanks for your help , Regards ,Chris Kennedy.

Re: problems with 200 hp evinrude

Your dealer will know where to order the thermostats. He will also know about the magnets but yes they can be reglued. The 6 outer are real easy but the center has to replaced EXACTLY in the right place.

All the things I mentioned increase combustion temps and that is the mortal enemy of a 2 stroke motor. Until you tell us more about your spark plugs, top rpm, water pressure etc its hard to say what is causing the piston to burn/scuff.

Never use any bonding material on the crank/flywheel. Never use lapping compound either.

Good luck!

top rpm is 6200. water prsr at 6200rpm is about 30 to 35, i normally run at around 4000rpm with water prsr at about 25 i think psi is it.
