Re: Problems with a '91 Bayliner Capri

New pretty exciting development:

I got the engine running today :)

I hooked up the water to it, and with a little effort, she started up. I didnt want to run it very long, because the water pump hasnt been serviced in a while. When it was running water did start coming out of the holes in the engine. I didnt get to check the temperature of the water coming out because i didnt leave the engine running long enough to really do any diagnostics. It seemed to be running at a higher than normal RPM for just being at idle. BUT, NOT HAVING A TACHOMETER DOESNT HELP...........

So yeah, I need some new gauges. Right now I have a functioning gas gauge, and a speedometer which might work.. It hasnt lit up yet so I might need to do some electrical work and fix it, but would anyone have recommendations for gauges, places to get gauges, etc? Id like to get a tachometer, temperature gauge, tilt gauge, and maybe an oil pressure gauge to start with.

Re: Problems with a '91 Bayliner Capri

Hey guys, I need some advice. I found a prop shaft, brand new on ebay for $150 shipped. My question is, my lower unit has some damage to it... The skeg is bent slightly. Not a major bend, but I think the aluminum is cracked. The guy I bought the boat from said it had been like that for a while, and that it hadnt affected the boat's performance. Now, If I were to replace the prop shaft myself, Id only pay for the price of parts I had to replace, as I have most tools I need to be able to do this. However if it becomes a problem and I cant do it, Ive got a quote from someone that it'd be about $150 in labor to change it out.

I have the service manual for the engine, a shop full of tools, extra hands, and plenty of time. Would it be better to do this myself, have someone do it for me, or just buy a used lower unit from ebay? I like the DIY idea because Im saving a lot of money turning this boat into something usable, but I might have problems later on with that skeg. Thoughts?

If yours has a crack....then definitely a used lower unit is the way to go.

Not what I was hoping to hear :( Im looking at this problem in this way.. $150 for the prop shaft if I DIY.. $300 for repairing the prop shaft If I buy the shaft and let someone replace it.. $500 if I buy the lower unit (and hope it fits my motor). When I asked the PO about the bent skeg he said it was like that when he got the boat in 1991. Im not sure if thats true or not because some of the stuff he said doesnt quite line up. The rest of the lower unit looks fine, its just the skeg that has a hairline crack running from back to front on one side.

If the crack isn't in the gear casing then you're fine. If the crack is at ALL in the gear casing I wouldn't spend $1 trying to fix it up.

The crack is entirely on the skeg, no question.

My skeg is also a little twisted. Was told it was to help correct the prop's tendency to pull the other way?

Re: Problems with a '91 Bayliner Capri

New update!

Im now looking into complete lower units, and am going to try to find one that can be pretty much plug and play. We'll see how that goes.

Also, I took the engine off today with a little help from a coworker and a bucket truck (to lift) and I was able to get the steering cable out of the tube. Its now free, and the engine is half mounted just so it will stay there and not fall off the back of the boat. Im going to be hooking it up to the air compresser/seafoam/motor oil to clean the steering cable out, and Id like a little reinforcement that my next step will be the right one.

Im going to buy a 3' tube that is just a hair smaller than what the steering cable needs to fit over it- it needs 13/16+, so Im going to get 3/4", and heat it up or whatever to get it to fit over. I have 1" now, but thats a bit too big. Ill then fill the tube with seafoam, put the compressor on it at ~100 psi, and put lots of old towels under the helm. Ill do this a couple times, then someone suggested putting 10W 20 full synthetic oil in, and using that as a lubricant for the cable. Any reason NOT to do this? If not, thats my plan.

I also bought some nice marine speakers to replace the hideous broken ones I have now. Its coming along!

Re: Problems with a '91 Bayliner Capri

Wow, I kinda neglected this page for a bit, so Ill tell about the events of the last month...

The steering has freed up a little bit with the use of some seafom/compressed air, to the point where its steerable and wont totally wear you out. I still havent seen any material come out the helm, and i guess I wont be this season, since Im putting it into storage ASAP.

I brought the lower unit to a boat mechanic to get it all fixed up, and he took it apart and found tons of damage, likely from when the propshaft had been broken off. Only the reverse gear was still good, the rest (including the gearcase) was junk.

I went on ebay, and bought one that looked like it was in good shape, and that'll be here thursday or friday. It was an auction style listing, and I won it in the last 4 seconds, and ended up paying $103 for the unit, and $75 shipping.

I also checked the compression on the cylinders, and Im getting 125, 135, 135, and 140 lbs. Not too shabby.

I had a look under the trailer, and found one leaf spring had broken, and both sets of springs were sitting almost flat or bowing slightly downwards, so I ended up buying 2 new leaf spring sets which will get installed later this week also. Also bought 2 new tires for the trailer, they needed it bad. All in all im lucky to have been able to transport it from where it was, to where I am now (2.5 hour drive) with all the things wrong with the trailer.

I did get the speakers in and looking/sounding good, but it really needs a new radio now. The original one that came with the boat isnt the best thing for great sounding audio.

Im really looking forward to getting the lower unit looked at, installed, having the motor tested, and getting a prop for this baby :)
