Dear Sirs,

I have recently purchased a 225 Yamaha 4 stroke outboard engine.
Serial # OT750085.

This engine is mounted on a Boston Whaler 210 Outrage model year 2003.

I have been using this boat / engine for approx. 8 months now.
I take very good care of my boat and engine, after each use in salt
water I thoroughly flush the engine with fresh water and I even spray
silicone after each use all over the the engine. Since the last 3 to 4
times I have used the engine I have this strange noise (sounds like the
squeaking noise of a fan belt) as soon as the engine has been used for a
while, meaning the engine has warmed up to its normal working temp. When
the engine has just started and for a approx. 10 minutes after that the
engine does not make this sound.
Someone told me that it might be the bushing from the shaft that goes
down to the gearbox.

Also I noticed that when driving at approx. 4000-6000rpms the engine
drops down in speed after a few seconds. First the engine used to go
full throttle at approximately 6000rpms and now it does not go more than
5500rpms.

I am really wondering what is wrong with this engine and if someone has
experienced the same trouble before with his YAMAHA or MERCURY 225
4-stroke engine.

Pls advice me with your experience.

Regards,
Edward Schnog

PS. I know that the engine is still under warranty, but I just want to
speed up this procedure, since I live in Curacao and I am the only one
who has this engine, the mechanics over here do not have the experience
to solve the problem.

Re: Problems with my 225 4-stroke Yamaha

hello
check the fuel pressre at the pressure rail while the problem is there. also test the fuel system vacum as per the yamaha tech servive manual(not engine service manual. you will also wish to record the data on a laptop at high speed to see if the knock sensor or anyother sensor is causing the speed reduction. its a standard trouble shooting procedure. not hard just sometimes time consuming.the squeak could be the drive shaft bushing or it can be the timing belt or belt tensioner. its sometimes normal to hear it.
does the service center you use have a laptop and the yamaha software or are they shooting from the hip?
poke and hope trouble shooting is very expensive with this engine.
good luck and keep posting

Thank you Rodbolt,

The service technician does not have a Laptop to hook up on my engine, but I will print out your suggestions and hand them over to him.

Thanks a million.

PS. Some one told me it might be the bushing of the drive shaft that goes to the gear box which makes the noise. What do you think ??

Hi

I had a F225 and there was a recall from Yamaha for that very reason. I dont remember exactly what it entailed, but it was paid for by Yamaha. You need to have your service guy, make sure he is a authorized service center and he should have a laptop or he is not, run your serial numbers and I am sure that will solve your porblem. The motor is a great motor

JR

I even spray
silicone after each use all over the the engine.
This could be the problem right here .If any spray has got on the belt, gears or pulleys you will get a squeak noise. You may have to take it in and have the belt replaced and pulleys cleaned.
I have had this type of noise before and it has been the belt every time.
The speed drop could be two things ,fuel restriction or believe me or not the plugs.
Check the little factory 90' hose just before the engine fuel filter ( it's tucked under the air box starboard side )see if it's kinked.
As the plugs go had one loose 1000 rpm foun d nothing wrong with it and the plugs looked fine ,replaced them and ran fine.

Re: Problems with my 225 4-stroke Yamaha

Your RPM reduction is something I don't feel qualified to answer since it may be a number of things.

A question back to you on the squealing...does it squeal at any speed? If it is doing it only at idle or very slow speeds then you can attribute it to a bushing in the shaft. I have the same problem with my 225 and my certified Yamaha mechanic has submitted an advisory to Yamaha regarding this. There is a cure but it is expensive and as of now Yamaha is not covering it since it doesn't have any negative effect on the motor other then it being annoying. If the squealing is happening at all speeds then there may be other problems. Good luck and keep us posted with what you find out.

Re: Problems with my 225 4-stroke Yamaha

hello
the bushing is just a steady bearing made of oilite in a rubber jacket that is pressed in the exhaust housing about 1 inch above the water pump. the new part number for the new bushing is 69j-45318-01-00 it is 23.1mm versus 22.4mm for the old part on the ID surface. the description is on page 3-60 of the 2004 tech service manual.
there is also a bulliten covering itermittent power loss after or when the trim is used at planing speeds. bulliten o2003-017.
good luck and keep posting but find someone with a computer to test your engine before its engine toast.

Re: Problems with my 225 4-stroke Yamaha

All of you I would like to Thank very much for your answers.
However Rodbolt, I would like to ask you one more thing. I went on the web site: http://parts.yamaha-motor.com on that site I clicked on the tab parts & service and then I clicked on parts catalog, I went to the 2003 F225 parts catalog file and searched for that part no. you informed me about (69j-45318-01-00) but could not find it. I did see all the images of all kinds of bearings, bushings, shaft and so on.
I would like to ask you to go to the same parts catalog page and inform me by using the item no. next to each image, which item no. I should replace.
Pls specificate exactly to which parts catalog you have looked, so I can do the exact same.
Meaning: File outboard => file 2003 => file F225TURB(2003) => page lower casing drive 3

Thanks a million,
Edward

Re: Problems with my 225 4-stroke Yamaha

hello
the number I posted,69j-45318-01-00 came from the 2004 Marine Technical Guide page 3-60.
the major differences in the bushing are the added chamfer on the OD to assist installation and the bushing ID is increased. I dont know why it wont show but your tech should have this guide. if not order it from yamaha.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Problems with my 225 4-stroke Yamaha

hello
the tech guide is handy and makes good reading on a cold night but its not a service manual. it contains infor mation on 2004 models and changes from 2003 to 2004 models. it also contains a superb training guide on how to use the YDS diagnostics and the 2004 edition contains a compleate technical description of the F150. the laptop on your paticular motor doesnot give as much information as I would like but if any warrenty work is requested you will be asked for a download from yamaha. if you cannot find a yammi dealer near you then try a merc dealer. you need to record the data as or just after the problem occurs. hit f2 and save the data while the problem is occuring without touching the trim or the throttle settings so a tech can see what is happening. the computer only records the last 13 min or so of data. and there is a bulliten about loss of power after hitting the trim switch that may be applicable to your engine. that bulliten is in the tech guide as well.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Problems with my 225 4-stroke Yamaha

Hi Mr.Rodbolt,

I read that you are a Marine mechanic, I was wondering, how come you know all the details !!

Anyway, last weekend we lowered the engine tail, to see if there was a problem with the bushing which is just above the waterpump (as you explained) and YES, you are right, that's were the noise was coming from. We saw rubbing indications against the bushing and the shaft, so we made the inner diameter of the bushing a little bigger, with a drilling machine, on which we mounted a cylinder and on arround that cylinder we taped some sand paper. I think this has solved the noise problem and I thank you a million for your kind advice.

About the problem with the speed reduction I wrote you about, I think we found the problem, there was a clamp missing on the fuel hose just before the fuel hand pump. So when you pressed the hand pump to fill up the filter in the engine, fuel drops come out just there where the hose clamp was missing. However it was a very small amount of fuel leaking, so I am not sure if this will solve the speed reduction problem, since I did not get the chance to test the boat as yet, but what do you think about this situation, do you think this can be the solution to the problem ??

Hope to hear from you again Rodbolt !!

Thanks,
Eddy
