I'm new to using forums so forgive any mistakes I might make. I've just gotten start on my new project. I'm wanting to make a crappie, bass, cat rig. As you see I'm starting with a blank slate. The boat is 13.5' long w\ 54" beam. It has a few small leaks in the seams near the rear, as well as several rivets. I've got a 3hp 1954 JW-10 Johnson Seahorse that runs great to power the old girl. I would however, like to reseal the lower unit (beginning to get milky). Does anyone know where I can get a seal kit for the lower unit? And is that a project that is easily done by a novice? I have been able to find an impeller, which I would also like to replace. I would like to keep "Oldschool" very light and functional. I will use it mostly on St. Mary's lake in Ohio, with the occassional night fishing outing. So with all that being said, and all winter to work on her, I need a few ideas if anyone could help.

Re: Project "OLDSCHOOL"

can't really say on your old sea horse. it could be leaking at the fill/drain screw. some have a rubber gasket ring. i also run old aluminum(1964 14' star-craft) and i use a set on any bad rivets. this is how it works-first ya need two guys. one guy holds the heavy set on the inside, you use the small set and good hammer on the outside of your bad rivet. one or two sharp!, hits and that baby's tight. hope that helps.

Re: Project "OLDSCHOOL"

We tried setting a little bit but between the cold and not sure if there might be sediment between edges, I thought I'd wait for warmer weather to power wash & set. By the way I forgot to mention it's a 1968 but has no brand name.thanks bard1

Great looking boat! It should be easy to do with it what you want.

Hi ooldschooll!

Thoughts...

* As for the motor question... I'd second Oops on the move to the OB section of the forum. (That motor is just fantastic though!)

* For more info on the boat itself (and maybe even the motor too), check out fiberglassics.com and theclassicboathouse.com.

* If you can't hammer the rivets tight, try "J B Weld". That's an epoxy-based adhesive/sealant... My wife and I have a 1957 aluminum runabout... We used that J B Weld stuff and that took care of the leaks...

* Yeah... Night fishing... :D

Re: Project "OLDSCHOOL"

Can't remember if your Sea Horse is a full F-N-R shift motor. Either way, the milky gear lube you're seeing may not be gear oil, but rather, old diluted Lubriplate 105 grease. Lubriplate is the recommended LU lube for non-shift motors, but also works well in shift motors where the seals are shot or the case simply won't reseal well. Costs about $6 per tube from auto parts stores...I think NAPA carries it for sure. It is a non-displacement grease, which means it doesn't mix with water. With Lubriplate in there, you still check for water as normal, but simply let the water drain out and put some more grease in there. Its a simpler way to maintain the older motors, some of which didn't have much in the way of LU seals.

Re: Project "OLDSCHOOL"

I agree it could be just getting water in from the drain and vent pug gaskets. Change those out and your problem might be solved. I haven't heard of filling a gear case with lubriplate before but my oldest engine is a 71. Also, when posting try to be more specific in your title Ie: engine yr., model or hp and I think you will get a better response than you will to your current heading. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: Project "OLDSCHOOL"

Your motor was designed for gear oil not grease. You can get it at your local marina, Walmart, etc. If its oil it will flow out when you remove the drain screw. If its grease it won't. Resealing the lower unit is easy enough, but will take some time and patience.

PM me your email address and I'll send you a copy of the parts manual for your motor and the operator's manual to the same vintage Evinrude (same motor). You will see by the parts manual that there are only a couple oil seals, an o-ring and a some washers that need to be replaced. The job is not out of the realm of a novice.

That gearcase is very easy to remove, take apart, and work on. When you remove the prop shaft bearing head, everything comes out the back. As it is a direct drive without shift, there are only a few parts. Seals, and water pump are readily available. It is designed for oil, don't use grease. The original oil was GX-90 hyphoid oil. The newer oil's such as premium blend will be fine.

Re: Project "OLDSCHOOL"

AHHHH, the old 3 horse!

My dad had an old 12 ft. flatbottom w/a 3 like that on it that he crappie fished the creeks off of the Tenn. River and night "jug fished" for catfish back in the late 50's/early 60's. Swapped the whole rig for a 14 ft. Duracraft flatbottom (still have) and a 5.5 Johnny (wish I still had) w/ shift so you didn't have to turn it around backwards to reverse! Using a '57 10 hp Johnny now which my brother and I have had on it for 13 yrs.

Sorry no input for you, just a reminisce. Tn. River has changed a lot since then and, sad to say, not for the better. Not only my opinion, a fact that any "river rat" could testify to.

BUT, GOOD GOSH AMIGHTY, I STILL LOVE GOING!!!!

Enjoy it. Great little motor from what I remember. Best thing is that it goes slow so you can enjoy being out and take in what you are there for. Not much of that left from my view!!

Re: Project "OLDSCHOOL"

Well I picked up a couple of seals for the fill and vent screws and give the old johnson a long trash can run. After 45 mins, (keeping the water cool )drained the OIL and all is well. Refilled with fresh oil and ready for spring. Also found a 5.5 64 johnson for long outings on big lakes. thanks
