prop slipping?

Hey y'all. I have. 1976 Evinrude 35 hp tiller handle. The motor runs fine at 3/4 throttle, but when I go full throttle it feels like the prop isn't in the water and the boat comes to an abrupt stop and veers hard to the left. Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: prop slipping?

Neutral_trim.JPG First, check your set up and make sure your motor is mounted with a neutral or negative trim and the AV plate is even with the bottom.

If that's OK, it sounds like it might be the prop hub slipping; in which case new props are available here for like $66 for a Solas Amita.

If the prop is dinged up at all, I wouldn't bother trying to get it fixed, since new props for that motor are cheap.

According to Lowe, the 1448 is rated for 25 hp.

After that the stopping and veering are over, what happens when you start back up?

Re: prop slipping?

I guess I should have good you more details about the boat. The boat is a 1976 Lowe 1448 flat bottom jon boat. I weigh 360 lbs and sit in the back with the motor, battery, and six gallons of gas. The AV plate.is approximately 1" below the bottom of the boat..maybe even closer to 3/4". Because of the added weight, I have the motor tilted on the second hole from the boat. I had it on the first hole but.the boat but the bow was plowing through the water. I put it on the 3rd hole and I thought the boat was gonna roll over on top of me. When I had it closest to the boat, I never.has this problem.

When I start back it does fine until I get to full throttle and then it revs up, stops and veers to the left. Its kinda intimidating and I dont want it to happen when I have my wife and 3 year old in the boat.

it might be your engine is mounted too high and the prop blows out.

when in doubt ask your wife what a blow-out is.

Re: prop slipping?

I thought about that too since it doesnt do it on the first home.closest to the boat. Is there any way to lower it without buying a jack plate? My wife is still pissed about me buying the motor since I have two other boats. Haha!

Re: prop slipping?

If I'm adding right you have what amounts to 600lbs at the stern of the boat .probably more than half of the rated capacity.
I'm surprised it behaves at all.You should move the battery and gas forward.
The sudden removal of power will make a boat try to dive. That happened to a friend with a 16 ft vintage Chris craft at about 35 mph
the bow went completely under and the water pressure cracked the windshield and filled the small cockpit.( a 3 passenger "racer")
You can check for a spun hub by drawing a water proof line across the hub and body of the prop and testing.
If its a spun hub the line will be broken once it revs on you. If the prop is pretty beat up just replace it.
