Re: Prop tuning - any comments/suggestions?

Time to bring this tread back to life.
hwsiii if you can once again look over my info and give me your input it would be greatly appreciated.
Over the winter I completely stripped the boat down. Cap off transom, floor, stringers all completely redone. While I was at it I went and did a complete make over of the interior adding a sun deck, teak swim platform, more current seating layout as well as storage locker in in the floor.
Anyway........... onto the task at hand, tuning this baby just a little more.

Facts
1. this being an OMC stringer propelled unit I took to raising the prop height up as much as I was able to and it now the antivent plate sits a full inch above the keel height. I am willing and able to drop it if necessary and once I have the boat out with a full load I think I will be adding a little more trim height to it for cruising. All depending on hwsiii input.

2. added smart tabs

3. I have added some weight (mostly to the back 1/3 of the hull) with the additional comfort and solid wood and glass as well as swim platform. But did move the batteries from there previous home just ahead of the crank pulley to in the floor centered beside my captains seat

1st runs were with my wsiii recommended - 19" Solas Amita 4 blade prop
top speed GPS 44.5 mph
RPM 4750
all around good performance - hole shot not a real neck snapper like my other prop.
Added a pic of vent plate at speed hard to see but nearly out of water (missing hinged portion of my swim platform as it was in the way for the pic)

2nd
OMC aluminium 15x17 391200
GPS top speed 40.4 @ 5500
38.1 @ 4750
Hole shot to beat the band! Man that thing gets it up on plane and hopping in a SHOT!

If I had all my wishes granted (as far as prop perf goes) I would hope for more speed as well as a better hole shot .......... lol

hwsiii just want to confirm your previous recommendation of taking my 39201 and having it fixed and double cupped. You still think that is my best option?

Thanks again

Re: Prop tuning - any comments/suggestions?

I want to clarify my above post.
I am looking for any input available as there are many here with good solid advise. I specified hwsiii in particular as he was who pointed me in what I consider to be the best direction to this point and advised me to go with 4 blade Solasas well as trying double cupping my 39201 (141/2 x19 aluminum OMC)

I have my somewhat marked up 39201 installed now and I am going to give it a shot hopefully tomorrow.

To all the Canadian iboat forum members, hope you had a great Canada Day. To all the American iboat members, hope you have a great 4th of July.
Any other countries please forgive my ignorance if you are celebrating your countries holiday as well. Please enjoy it.

Later

Re: Prop tuning - any comments/suggestions?

So I went to the lake yesterday and gave the marked up 39201 (141/2 x19 aluminum OMC) a try.
I was impressed with all around performance but still shocked at how much hole shot is lost going from a 15 x 17 to either of my 19 inch. I expected a difference but not as substantial as there is.

top speed 41.6
Max RPM 4850
Moral of the story as I see it has me doing what hwsiii had recommended (real shocker there....NOT) and having the 39201 fixed up and have it double cupped.
Question I have is what overall effect will the double cupping have on top speed/rpm as well as hole shot?

Thanks in advance for all replies

Re: Prop tuning - any comments/suggestions?

Question for any/all who read this. Based on info above and me wanting my cake and eating it too is a Raker prop an option I should consider? What are the benefits, drawbacks etc....
Again any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Prop tuning - any comments/suggestions?

Well update for this thread.

I took my Smart tabs down to minimum setting and got a nice surpise with planing speed and ease.
I then added a bit of height as well as a tad more trim (remember OMC Stringer here) I am maxed out now for two reasons.
1. without playing with the transom again, which I am not going to do I have no more additional room to go up.
2. cavitating a fair bit on hard turns when trimmed up with my 3 blade and a bit with 4 blade.

Overall at the moment I am liking my 4 blade as I have more yank as well as less cavitation.
With the raising of the motor and added trim I have come up with only 1 mph up to 43 mph but came up with RPM maxed out @ 5125 with my 3 blade 39201 (141/2 x19 aluminum OMC) sorry left the 4 blade in the truck so I couldn't try it out.
If I can get input/suggestions on double cupping my 39201 going with a Raker, or going to another 4 blade or whatever I'd appreciate all input/comments.

Thanks

Unfortunately H is very busy with the oil spill I don't think he's been on in a month
I'm sure he'll respond to a pm if he has the time.Hope he posts his thoughts here.
I don't know much about the Raker except I read somewhere it might further depress your hole shot.
