A friend of mine is looking to buy a boat to use on the river. His first conflict is Prop vs Jet drive. Then, tunnel vs flat bottom. Can a prop motor be used with a tunnel hull jon boat? Any one got any ideas or pics I can share with him?

Yes a prop can be used with tunnel hull ...... it is better to use a prop than the jet drive in a river as the jet drive does more damage to the enviroment in a river than a prop ........

Tracker Marine (Bass Pro Shops) sold a neat tunnel hull 17' a few years ago with a nice interior. Check also Smokercraft and G3, owned by Yamaha.

the jet drive has it's place, rough terrain, rocks, shallows. but, the effiency of the jet is 30-40% less than a prop. a 100hp propped motor, delivers 100 hp at the prop.. 100hp jet drive delivers, 60-70 Hp out the jet drive. thus the jet will use more fuel, and never give the same performance.

What does this mean deejay?

you see the reason why jet-ski's and jet boats are not allowed to be in any inland waters ie. a river or dam here in South Africa is because the jet directly suck the water through it's pump system destroying the fish eggs and plant life in the water ......... hope that makes sense ......

Hey deejay, is it warm there today? Its about 20 here this morning. I live right off the Des Moines river, and you can track the jet fleas by the muddy water they stir up.

Totally false, a jet wouldn't last for a single minute acting as a dredge. Plant life isn't an issue because it clogs the intake and is avoided. The jetpump doesn't chop through anything. It sucks water in an area and doesn't pull anything from the bottom because its already is past that area. That's why I can run through 6 inches of water on plane and never pull a single pebble.
The only disturbance is through turbulence from the pump exaust. But since a prop is more efficient you have more turbulence from it.
All the salmon spawning grounds here have jets running over them , props aren't an issue because they can't even leave the boat ramp.

The BF50 Honda jet I used is rated at 35hp at the nozzle. The BF90 that I'm waiting for is rated at 65hp at the nozzle, as is my daughters F90 Yami.

The rule when running a jet out here is if the stick, rock, stump isn't above the waters surface it isn't an issue.

So if you plan to run in a shallow river you need a jetpump. If you aren't, run
a prop.

Tunnel hulls are a fine compromise.

I would say Skinnywater got that one right. To the rest, if you havn't been running jets on rivers than you are just guessing. Chief Chief
