Re: Prostate!

Most suffer and die from the effects/affects of treatment, faster than if left alone. Doc's don't make money leaving you alone. Seek alternative/non conventional remedy.

If I had used this approach 3 years ago I'd most likely be dead now. Had a check up at my GP 3 years ago with a 10.5 psa and a quetionable DRE. Sent to a great urologist who did a biopsy and 9 of 12 samples were agressive cancer. Gleason score 8-9. He sent me to a very good Radiation Oncologist who started hormones followed by 9 weeks of radition. Did 1 year of hormones (that was the worst part, talk about hot flashes). After the hormones wore off (took 10 months) my psa has gone from 0.1 while on hormones to 0.4 after 4 months to 0.74 after 4 more months (urologist starting to worry) and just had my follow up yesterday morning and the psa dropped slightly to 0.7. Best Xmas present I could ask for. He says while I'm not out of the woods completely he is optomistic. Moral of the story is trust your GP and your urologist and try to find the best like mine. :joyous:

Re: Prostate!

Hey Teddie, glad it's working out for you and the PSAs are improved.

I think it's important to remember that a high PSA is just aa indicator that something ain't quite right and other than cancer there only one or two things that can affect PSA results. In your case with 9 of 12 aggressive samples, treatment was needed. I'll have to ask my urologist about the hormone treatment and do some web research. It sounds like you got some good med pros working with you. Buy a tinny and rebuild her, it'll do you heart good.

A word of caution for those concerned about prostate cancer - there are what I call money grabbers out there. Slick marketing. 60 page glossy brochures with a DVD and optimistic reports of "cure rates" that are backed up by shaky un-updated statistics. Their results are pushed as very positive and little mention of the cases that don't have favorable outcomes. Research, research and more research is the best thing you can do along with competent medicos.

I need to get my Google re-built soon. She's overheating and smoking from all the searches I've done on the subject. Good luck to all of us with any health issues and Merry Christmas to all!

Re: Prostate!

I am currently in the 'wait and monitor' department. :welcome:

Had the high PSA, take these pills routine about September of last year. Looong story short, I had the Biopsy done around mid-January (what is a Gleason score?). Got the all-clear from the biopsy, waited 6 months to repeat the PSA test. Went in to see the Doc, he said we'll mail the results to you, come back in 6 (more) months for a Digital Exam. About a month later I receive a form letter stating that my PSA was 'normal', but my actual number was on the high side of their 'normal'. A week later, I get an urgent phone call from the Dr's office. His receptionist (I recognized the voice) insisted that my 'high PSA' required another two weeks of antibiotics followed by a repeat PSA test!!

:rolleyes: Lady, I've already jumped through those hoops, I'll just wait for my Digital Exam......

And the kicker to all of this? I'll be 41 this February!

Are you saying that your doc didn't explain Gleason to you? While 39 is young to start all this stuff, it's not unheard of. PC is usually an older man problem, it's not limited to us. In my opinion, you should consider changing Docs or ay least a second opinion.

Re: Prostate!

Since they didn't find any cancer cells, there was no need to explain gleason scores apparently.

Curious if Royal has some sort of family history that prompted the early testing.

Sorry, I have not re-visited this thread.

Actually, it all started with a visit to the Dr. for another 'issue'. This being a family forum, I won't go into detail....

The 'issue' was nothing according to the Doc, but a 'routine' PSA test snowballed. I think a Half-Uncle of mine had prostate problems, but I'm not sure. Maybe that little tidbit pushed the Doc towards early testing.
