Interesting..

I think there is something wrong with this thing..

I can't even wind it enough to wind up the rope while its off the OB, more then 2 turns and the retainer slips around..

Now gonna have to figure out how to get this thing apart and see if I can work out what the problem is..

Do you have a decent scematic of yours oldboat?

rgds

Franki

Re: Pull starter on Chrysler 6HP.

Hi Franki -- sorry to hear about the trouble. There is a blowup in the Intertec "Old Outboard Motor" (vol. 1), and I think in the Clymer manual for Chryslers. Unfortunately, I don't have a working scanner or I would try to send a copy. The blowup might not be all that much help, though.

It sounds like the bottom of your spring is not connected to the spring retainer. There is a vertical end of the spring pointing downward that fits into the hole in the plastic retainer. When the spring is inserted, the end sticks out slightly below the bottom of the retainer, and there is a tiny brass clip that is crimped on after insertion to hold the spring in place. Actually, I think the spring would stay in the retainer without the clip as long as you have inserted the end through the hole. The lower bracket then fits up in place on the spool, and the pin on the bottom of the lower bracket rides in the slot on the bottom of the plastic retainer.

With starter assembled (including the pinion pin through the spool up at the top, and the screw in place to hold the pin), you should now be able to wind the spring by using the bottom bracket sort of like a key. I did it with the rope fully wound around the spool. Two or three turns is probably enough -- I think in a clockwise direction (same direction as the spool turns to rewind the rope, I think). The spring should now be wound -- can check by pulling the rope out a little. If it seems too loose, give the lower bracket another turn.

I did this with the top bracket of the assembly loosely in place on the powerhead. When the tension was set, all I had to do was attach the lower bracket (get in the outside screw, and it will be stable.) You might be able to do it holding the starter to the workbench, and then transferring the whole assembly to the block. You also have the rope to contend with, though, and if you let go of it during the process the spring will probably just unwind. (The starter rope handle in mine stays inside the hood up above the carburetor, so it's a little different than the kind (probably yours) that runs through the lower cowling.)

Hope you can get it to work.

Re: Pull starter on Chrysler 6HP.

Ok,,,

Think I understand how things thing works internally now, and I think I also know the reason for my problems..
The clip on retainer is obviously something that was introduced after my model and before yours, cos there is no clip here on mine....

I actually pulled the whole spring out of mine, its pretty simple design actually..

Then using a pair of pointy nose pliers, I streatched the end of the spring out about 3mm, so it actually goes right though the hole. (it wasn't before.)

put it all back together, and it now looks like its gonna work..

So, my idea, is to drill a small hole in the bottom of the powerhead housing as close to directly under the starter as possible..

Slide a flat blade screwdriver though it and use it to wind up the spring and hold it in till the retainer is over the pin that holds it..

That should get me in the right direction..

Then I am gonna tune and sell this OB and buy a 10-15HP... :)

wonder if I can find an electric start tiller model.

No mater......... I'll let you know how this works out.

rgds

Franki

sounds like you might be on track. I had the spring out of mine too -- had to straighten the the end a little so it would go through the hole. It's an interesting piece of engineering.

Re: Pull starter on Chrysler 6HP.

I got it working and tensioned !!!!!!!!!!!!!

No special tool, no removing the powerhead and no drilling holes in the bottom of the PH housing..

All I did, was to take the handle off the rope, wind the rope fully onto the spool and hold in place with a little insulation tape.

Then I installed the unit back onto the motor, once it was all bolted in. I turned the starter about 5 turns anticlockwise till I felt some tension in it trying to spring back..

The distance between the spool with the starter rope on it and the PH housing is quite small on this motor, so I slid a screwdriver between it to stop the rope upspooling when the insulation tape came off..

Then I got a pair of vice grips, and gently locked them over the top of the starter unit and the legs of the vice grips were on each side of the crankshaft. (cos I had the flywheel off for access)

so the spool had tension and was held in place, and the rope could not unspool because the screwdriver I had sitting in the gap between the spool and the housing was stopping it..

So then I removed the insulation tape holding the rope in place, and freed about 5 inches of rope, just enough to slide the rope through the little pulley mounted to the motor and pulled the other end out with a pair of pointy nosed pliers..

Then I removed the vicegrips, and the screwdriver, and pulled enough rope out to thread it through the hole on the front of the housing and reinstalled the rope handle..

There is excellent tension there now, better then it was prior to failing and it all seems good to go..

In the end, after a week of speculation, the job took less then 10 minutes, and required no mental or physical gymnastics.. :)

Funny how life works out sometimes...

Anyway, just thought I'd let you all know in case someone else has the same problem.

rgds

Franki

Franki,

There's nothing a guy can't do with some duct tape and a pair of visegrips. Life is good.

Of course, now you may want to hang on to the motor a while longer....

Regards,

Curt (oldboat)

Re: Pull starter on Chrysler 6HP.

I'd certainly like to..

but too small is too small...
I need at least a 9hp and probably a 15...
not much I can do about that..
Its a shame, cos its a cool little motor that I'm rather attached to..

but it will serve someone else with a small tinny very well.. (if I didn't want to spend the money I make by selling it, I'd keep it for a little tinny myself.)

rgds

Franki

Re: Pull starter on Chrysler 6HP.

Hi Guys, i am about to tackle the same problem with my 15hp,
I am glad I'm not the only one who has to go through this.
I thought my spring was broken but now I'm not sure?
maybe i just need to bend it a little and re coil it back into position.
I will see how i go????
any advice would be appreciated...........

Re: Pull starter on Chrysler 6HP.

I was along at my second favourite shop ( No1 is the dump) Rum City Outboard Wreckers buying me some Outboards.

Bought two 55"s and a 6Hp

I noticed that on his rack of 6Hp"s a lot of them looked almost new, but they
all had bustigated recoil starters, with the cords hanging out.

At home, on investigating the 6Hp, there is a cone shaped piece of plastic trash on the bottom of the starter tube this stops that end of the torsion spring from rotating, it looked pretty sick , so I made up a metal one.

Still wouldn't work.

So I threw out the spring, the bit I had made up and the long rod that held
the other end of the spring, replacing all of the above by a tension spring
from my junk box.

The tension spring came from one of those chest expanders ( Dump) it was
just the right diameter to fit inside the tube and was stretched between
the pin that holds/motivates the plastic gear and the bottom pin.

The 55hp gets me there the 6hp gets me home.
