Pulling an I/O engine?

Hi Guys,

General question on pulling the engine from a boat with an I/O. The boat is on a trailer, so it's pretty high, which means a car-style cherry picker wont reach. Any other suggestions on how to pull the motor?

Thanks

Re: Pulling an I/O engine?

couple of things that worked for me:
1. the side of my boat was so I let the air out of my tires.
2. Put the cherry picker on blocks then used a come-a-along to pull the enging out of the bilge.
3. I would set the engine down on the side of the boat deck so it was out of the bilge and then re attach it to the cherry picker so i could get it over the side.

My nieghbor used a strong tree branch and a rope and his truck. It only took two breaking tree branches for him to abandon that idea. But he put the cherry picker in the back of his truck (which is super lifted) and used my comealong to get it out but he did some damage to the back of his boat.

Other wise you could get some plywood and build a make shift A frame?

Just a couple Ideas

I pulled the engine out of my 66 Mark Twain using one of those "cherry pickers" It was barely high enough to clear the gunwales...

When I pulled the engine out of the Liberator I used an overhead hoist. With the "cherry picker, even letting the air out of the tires wouldn't have helped!

What ever you do, be as safe as possible don't take any chances! You cannot operate that boat in a wheel chair!!......and besides, we don't want your wife coming on here and telling us you had an engine fall on you and wanting to know which one of us she needs to put in the "crosshairs"!!

Ditto... it's a good idea to have a couple buddies there...

I used a two ton cherry picker to pull my 302 out of a 75 MT Vsonic. The lifting beam would telescope out to gain extra height. I raised the front of the trailer as high as I could get it and I had plenty of clearence to get the motor over the back of the transom. But moving the cherry picker is VERY Dangerous with a load on it that high up. Just do not get in a rush.

If you have a support I beam in your garage you could attach a winch to that and pull the motor and then pull the boat out of the garage on the trailer. Just make sure you use a winch rated high enough for the job! In our house our bedroom is above the garage so we have an I beam across the center of my garage running the full width. If I ever have to do taht that is what I am going to try.;)

That's EXACTLY how I did it. I used a 3 ton chain hoist.

Re: Pulling an I/O engine?

I rented a 9 foot cherry picker from my local rental center to get mine out of my 21 foot Sea Ray.

I'm going to bolt together a homebuilt gantry this summer from I-beams from a surplus center locally... should handle up to a couple tons nicely.

Just rent Deere, Case, whatever, backhoe and use it;If you ain't familiar with it, practice before you get it near anything that costs money.

I got every thing ready to go and had a tow truck come and hook up to my chain , done in about fifteen minutes .$ 50.00 no problems

Re: Pulling an I/O engine?

I was able to use a regular cherry picker. In fact, that is where my engine is right now, hanging from the cherry picker. Not much room to spare, but enough to get the engine out.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Pulling an I/O engine?

Thanks guys. Found a guy with a towtruck, and also a guy with a shop that has a beam-mounted chain lift. Using one or the other option, I'm sure I'll get it out.

Thanks

Re: Pulling an I/O engine?

If you have both options, then the best is the beam mounted chain. Tow trucks and backhoes work fine as long as everything is smooth and completely ready to pull ... but they lack a certain "finese" which can be important if you forgot a wire or a hose or whatever.
