Hey guys,

Hope all is well, Happy New Years to all

I have a 2000 Chaparral Signature twin 5.7. Need to pull my port engine, need to replace coupler, but need to slide forward first then pull. Has anyone pulled a motor with the is kind of setup. I'd like to hear how you did it. Also I have a radar arch, do I need to unbolt it also?

many thanks in advance

Don't need to measure just trying to get a feel where the center of the motor is. Think your going to need some kind of cantilever with enough height to clear the rear deck, or use long straps and have a lot of help to hold it when lifting and lowering. Many manufactures use cantilever fixtures to pic up pallets with a crane

How much room is there from the hatch opening to the rear of the transom. You MIGHT have to make a notch for the chain to remove the motor.

Have you checked the Chaparral Boats forum ? I saw a few discussions about engine removal, but mostly the work was done by mechanics and not owners. It seems like there is a way to get them out without too much fuss.

Also is there a larger deck section that can be removed to improve access? Or is it just those hatches shown in you picture?

AD's idea of a u-shaped arm is probably the way to go if nothing else can be removed from the deck.

Alldodge, thanks for the idea with the cantilever fixtures

BT Doctor - that will be my last resort making a notch thanks for looking at my post.

Tpenfield - I have searched the chaparral forum, a few asked the same question but no one has followed up. Actually the same coupler was replaced a year ago from the previous Owner at my current marina (no longer keeping boat there, boat is home now) just like everything I own, I'd rather do everything myself so I know its done right but this might be to much for me :grumpy: but I will try. Nope that's it, just the hatches.

This might be a excuse for me to fire up the welder and build some type of small gantry with casters in the engine bay to raise and slide the motor forward. since I'm going to keep this boat for awhile. I'm sure someday I'm going to have to remove the starboard side engine.

2nd coupler failure in a year +/-?

Good luck on figuring out how to pull that engine.

Reminds me of having to pull the top end of the motor to reach the 3 plugs and coil packs in the back against the fire wall on my 3L Ford Escape

ormjgrouch, not being there and seeing things first hand, it looks like AllDodge's cantilever fixtures idea is the way to go. But you can either rent or buy a nice engine host to do the lifting and control the movement as well. I have used a nice engine host myself and once you have the engine up high enough, you can move the engine host back to allow the engine to clear and then lift it higher and clear the boat. Sounds harder then it actually is. JMHO!

jburt00 - Tell me about it 2nd coupler!?!?! should of see the faces on the mechanic/employees at the marina when I told them. at least I had a good year out with the boat with the family, now I need to check everything over so we go venture out more.

gm280 -wish that it was that easy. yes I'm starting to like alldodge idea. will need to figure out a design, O do have a engine hoist but its no way near the size I need for the boat.

Alldodge, thanks man. I'm getting good some ideas.

pretty funny I was at the gym this morning and looking at all the equipment/stand I was working on, and getting ideas.

I'm liking your idea more than my little gantry/casters idea in the engine bay.

Combination of the pallet fork crane and the cantilever is probably the only way without opening up the deck.

Get all the other stuff out of the way before moving the engine... No sense having the engine coming forward knock that stuff loose.

Obviously this is going to be a two man job. At east I would have another person around while doing the lift. But that is just my opinion. Three people would be even better. :noidea:

fhhuber - yep, will probably need to remove exhaust manifold/risers and probably need to pull my generator as well.

gm280 -anyone want to come to Northern Virginia? ha

would you guys try this yourself or would you guys leave this to the pros? (I hate saying that)

I could have sworn there is a much larger hatch covering the whole bilge area. I believe the seats have to come out.

I would suspect the factory installed the engines then put the deck on the hull...

there is a much larger deck...... most likely they capped it after the motors were in.
