According to the Evinrude technical literature (E35ECTS), one should not pull the flywheel with an edge type puller because it is "certain" that the flywheel will be damaged. Is Evinrude referring to damaging the teeth that the starter engages? There is an edge above the teeth that accommodates a pull rope (in an emergency). Is there any problem pulling from this edge? What gives here?

Re: Pulling Flywheel

yes you need the puller that bolts to the 3 holes on top of the flywheel

Re: Pulling Flywheel

They want you to use a puller that threads into holes atop the flywheel around the retaining nut.Like a harmonic ballancer puller.Cast flywheels can break easily using rim type pullers, not to mention the center of pull.

Re: Pulling Flywheel

I went out and bought the proper flywheel puller at my local autoparts store for around $15.00.
I'm glad that I did because it took alot of force on the puller to finally get the flywheel off. I'm positive that an edge type puller would have destroyed my flywheel.

Re: Pulling Flywheel

I didnt have access to a proper puller but found a solid piece of steel about 10cm * 10cm, and around 5mm thick. Drilled 3 holes and found 3 bolts to screw into the flywheel. Tightened them up till tension on the centre nut and then gave the centre a wack with the hammer. This was enough to loosten the flywheel after a few solid taps. May be an option if you cant afford or want to spend money on a puller. Hope this helps.

Peter
