i apologize for starting this up again but i now found the problem.

i have a 250a / sp Volvo penta I/O

i had a leaky recirculating pump. it had to be replaced.

found a marine pump for 400$ then after looking into it they had the same pump with same part #### by volvo for a car for 50$
part #271975

so i bought the 50$ and there is a 3/4 inch hole i have to cover (no problem) just like the old 1.

but also a small pressure release hole about 3 or 4 mm on the side of this pump as well.

i took the black plastic cap (1'') of the old one and was wondering if i should put it on the new one as well? it dosnt look like it really dose anything.

was buying this 1 a good idea?

no info on it in my manual at all.

to see picture of pump http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo240heatingcooling.htm

or can i just close this hole myself. or do i leave it open? thanks guys, any help would be great.

thanks ....dug.

Re: PUMP pressure relaese hole????

well i found out the answer to my own question. So i thought id post it here incase anyone wanted to know.

1) the small hole is a drainage hole incase the seal goes the coolant will leak from this hole on the bottom of the pump. the seal is near the wide part of the pump ( before the hole) not after the hole as i thought it. in my opinion the plastic cap that slides in there is useless and not necessary i think only so crap dosn't get up in there (i am no expert though).

note. u can buy this 400$ pump for 40$ at a automotive shop. u just also have to buy a 5$ rubber cap if you cant use your old 1.
i dont know if the marine one comes with this cap, if it dose there charging you 350$ for it.

cap #418571

why 8 times the price for marine? same part # for automotive.
don't know if im missing something. hope this helps.

Re: PUMP pressure relaese hole????

Usually the marine version has a brass or Stainless impeller rather than the stamped steel one you will see in the auto version. If you are on saltwater you will get maybe a year or two out of the cheap o one. That is why they are so much cheaper. If you are freshwater it probably wouldn't matter.

i am salt water ,,,,,, but its for the coolant.. 50% anti freeze 50% fresh water with rust inhibitor as well. so the salt water wont affect the in impeller right?
