purchasing boat out of state

I live in Ohio and may be purchasing a used boat in Michigan. Does anyone know which state I will pay the sales tax to? I don't think I can be taxed by both states, at least not at the full rate of each state.

Thanks

You will pay sales tax in Ohio when you register the boat, fd1.

JB is correct. I bought my boat in Michigan and paid the taxes when I registered it in Florida.

there is one other factor, if buying from a dealer , you will pay michigan, then when registering, if Ohio taxes are higher, you will pay the difference. that happens in buying in Georgia, and registering in Florida.

The Michigan dealer I bought my boat from registered it for me in Florida over the phone. I paid no Michigan taxes whatsoever, only Florida tax.

I bought it today and towed it 275 miles home. I payed no MI sales tax but will pay the Ohio tax when I register it.

Re: purchasing boat out of state

I just bought boat from individual seller in Indiana and i live in KY. I was told by my county clerk that i would not pay sales tax on the boet. I was told that i would pay registration and transfer title fees. They told me i would fill out a NHU form which is a non highway usage form. Has anybody heard of not having to pay sales tax when buying from an individual from out of stae?

It depends on the state you live in. I live in IL and had to pay taxes on the actual value of the boat. I purchased it in CO from a relative for $1.00. Tax on the dollar would have been much less  than the actual value. State says they would evaluate the value if the purchase price seems to low.
Then had to pay for titling and registration.:(

Re: purchasing boat out of state

Purchased mine from a fellow in Scottsdale, AZ. Brought it up to Las Vegas, NV.
for registration. Nv. Fish & Game told me there is no sales tax on watercraft when doing a private sale. Only if you buy it from a dealer.
It still was a pain in the rear dragging it around to both the F&G and DMV for the trailer ID. At the DMV he couldn't find the trailer ser # on it and stated it must be stolen/hot. I said BS. So he goes into his comfy air conditioned office and starts a search on it and I get on my back, on the hot asphalt looking for it.
Low and behold, there it was on the bottom of frame, right behind the spare tire holder,...welded in.
Then off to F&G.....She looks at the plate on the stern and says that all the letters & numbers aren't there. I say, what? She says "GLAN", is suppose to be stamped at the beginning of the hull #. (Because it's a Glastron boat).
I state that the plate is factory installed and they didn't seem to think it was needed. She states, "The state of NV thinks it should be there". And then says "She hasn't seen me or the boat yet", and to get the "GLAN" on there anyway I can and bring it back. So great, here I go dragging the boat to where I work to use the punch set and trying to make it look factory..
Try punching an aluminum plate riveted to fiberglass and making it look factory. It looked lousy at best. So then I head back up to F&G to make sure she doesn't get away. Thankfully she was still there and I didn't get someone else, I could here it now......"That plate looks fake/tampered with!!!!

Sorry for the long story, but what a pain in the butt to get a out of state boat/trailer registerd in another state. I guess $50 in gas and 5 hours of my time is still better then paying 7.75 percent sales tax on a $10,000 boat.

Re: purchasing boat out of state

You've got me wondering where my plate is. I looked at the trailer yesterday and saw a plate but the numbers and specs were almost not readable. Looks like they have worn off. I think i will look harder to see if there is another serial# id on the trailer. In Kentucky we do not have to register the trailer. I do have a title on the trailer that i will have transfered in my name.
